Yeah, Chuck Behler, who was Samuelson's drum tech, as I understand it, was not a great replacement.

I've heard all of them, but don't own:

Guns 'N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood
    Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry
Kyuss - Blues For The Red Sun
    Prong - Cleansing
    Tool - AEnima
White Zombie - La Sexorcisto: Devil Music
Ratt - out Of The Cellar
    Korn - Korn

My favorite from that list - Opeth, Blackwater Park

Right... with So Far So Good, it's just a drop in songwriting after the near-perfection of Peace Sells.

In My Darkest Hour is the highlight and it is a stone cold classic, essential Megadeth track, and Hook In Mouth is solid. On the other hand, their Anarchy in the UK cover is pointless and Mary Jane and Liar offer nothing. Also the lyrics across the album aren't as good. I know, I know, we don't care about metal lyrics for the most part but Mustaine's can be pretty enjoyable when he's on his game, and he's not here, IMO.

Anyway... this list got me to revisit Celtic Frost, man I barely remember it. Pretty wild stuff. Impressively forward thinking, especially To Mega Therio and In the Pandemonium, the latter of which is not on the list but it should be, it is their best and craziest and most interesting.

Now I'm listening to a Bathory album for the first time in like 15 yrs and... lol.. remember why "black metal" is where I generally get out the metal train.

Not really. Starting with the fifth album, the vocals are "clean", but not exactly good. A lot of off-key warbling. But the music is good. Sample the albums Hammerheart, Twilight of the Gods, and Blood on Ice. Steer clear of the early albums if you're not into primitive punkish thrash/proto-black metal with screamed vocals.

Bathory is credited with pioneering two styles: Black Metal and Viking Metal, especially with the two albums on this list.

Vocals are not "clean," if you mean melodic like regular rock, like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. It's not "cookie monster" like American Death Metal either. It's more harsh and shrieky. So if you've heard Venom, it's like but more, or Children of Bodom.

With the album Blood Fire Death the vocals are a teensy bit less like that but not much. The songs get bit more "epic" and longer and with songs about European mythology they inspired "Viking" metal.

Musically, very dense of course, with rumbling bass all over the place. The riffs and leads come at you in bursts, it's not long solos per se.

I've heard significant chunks of some of the other Sabbath albums listed as I have a 2 cd compilation of Sabbath's years with Ozzie

I took the "test" after opening the thread, but now I've read through it and forgot what number I got! I think it was 51, though. I'm such a poser! :D

On the 'Tallica/'Deth discussion - those who overlook classic Megadeth because Metallica were so good are making a mistake, in my opinion. Everything Megadeth did up to 1992 gives Metallica a run for their money, and surpasses them in some aspects.

So Far So Good So What "slumped"?? Nonsense, it's an awesome little album.

Of course, the correct (and the most satisfactory approach) is to ignore all the animosity between both bands, refuse to take sides, and enjoy 8 excellent thrash metal albums. :D

So Far is a great album. I can't wait to get to it in Bear's impending Megadeth album by album thread.

I'm at 56, although there's clearly a time divide for me. Very strong on the older stuff, much less so on the newer.

Great album. For my money it's the best metal album from the last twenty years.
