Sorry I left off Mighty Wind, Spinal Tap, Team America World Police, and any of several Monty Python pictures. 35 years is a long time.

No Robin Williams films? I always thought he was over rated. Guess I'm not the only one. . . :righton:

Most of Robin Williams' best films (The Fisher King, Insomnia, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting) are not comedies. His best comedy films are the tapings of his stand-up routines such as "Live on Broadway" or "Live at the Met".

As funny as Robin is, I can't think of any of his "comedy" films that stand up as "classics". Funny? Of course, but not it the league of some of the films already mentioned.

One of my favorite overall films of any genre is "The World According To Garp", but it's more of a 50/50 comedy/drama than an overall comedy.

Another great Woody Allen film is, "Sleeper". It might just be my favorite of his. :righton:

"Mrs. Doubtfire II" is on the way. :shake:

I like "Good Will Hunting", but the one scene that absolutely does not work is the "comedy" scene with Ben Afleck going to a job interview in Will's place and asking for a "retainer". Too bad they though that was a good idea.

I also like Gus Van Sant's "To Die For". I saw an interview with Nichole Kidman, who was promoting the film, and she couldn't beleive that in Japan (when the interview took place) they were marketing this black comedy as a drama.

I thought Robin was outstanding in Aladdin, but I wouldn't put it on my list. To Die For is right up there with The Graduate and Pulp Fiction as great black comedies. Which reminds me that I forgot Dr. Strangelove. 35 years is definitely a long time.

The Pink Panthers series by the late Peter Sellers have to be my favorites. Steve Martin was in some remake that came out in February, as I saw the promo in the street of NY. It was just a waste of time and the movie was probably a flop, Steve Martin is no Peter Sellers.

Sellers was fantastic! I recently purchased, "The Pink Panther Strikes Again", and "The Revenge...". Great comedy!! I need the other earlier ones, as well.

Well, he's no Mark Twain either but they just gave him the Mark Twain Award. In all seriousness here at the comedy thread I just rented The Pink Panther and it wasn't very funny at all. It was a tedious bedroom farce with a couple of good sight gags. I understand A Shot in the Dark is the best film of the series, so I'll have to see that again, but I think Blake Edwards has done much better. My favorite Sellers is Dr. Strangelove which is one of the funniest movies ever as well as Lolita and Being There. And for what it's worth at his best Steve Martin is as funny as Sellers. I guess you didn't like Roxanne, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, and All of Me.

My understanding is James Bond movies have similar ownership issues. Dr. No, Goldfinger, From Russia with Love and You Only Live Twice and perhaps a few others are owned by one company while the rest, including the most recently released Bond movie, are owned by another company.

    1) Airplane!

And then the other 11, in no real order:

    - The 40 Year Old Virgin
    - This is Spinal Tap
    - Rushmore
    - The Big Lebowski
    - Office Space
    - Deconstructing Harry (another underrated Woddy Allen film)
    - Monty Python's Meaning of Life (uneven, but has classic moments)
    - Kentucky Fried Movie
    - The Naked Gun
    - The Princess Bride
    - Revenge of the Pink Panther (again, not everyone's first choice of the series)

I thought having twelve would make this list easier, but it was hard taking out some of my other faves. I'm glad it was limited to 35 years, though, or I'd be here all night.

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but it's my favorite comedy of the '90s. It's that rare romantic comedy that remains consistently funny throughout, even as the romantic element comes to the forefront.
