It's great to see more RCA and Columbia Quad titles being released on SACD. Vocalion has been putting out quality products for years.

I hope they get around to Peter Matz Summer of '42...that is a great quad mix and really relaxing, though I must admit I'm not generally real big on mood music albums, but man the quad era had a ton of it!

The label released Floyd Cramer on SACD? Incredible. How does this stuff sound?

Amazing! They had access to the master tapes and the Quad mixes themselves are excellent as most RCA Quad albums from those days are.

Micheal Dutton, who runs the label, has a long background in the industry (he worked at Morgan studios in London in the 70's, where they did the Jethro Tull and Black Sabbath quad mixes amongst others) and has a good grasp of what's available, but he also faces the same hurdles generally speaking that AF has/does - essentially that you have to find titles that a) you can license b) you can find the tapes for c) that will sell, and if any of those conditions can't be met it's a non-starter.

I know a lot of these titles aren't really on anyone's radar here, aside from maybe the Tower Of Power and Main Ingredient albums, which are phenomenal if you like mid 70's soul and R&B, I have to wholeheartedly reccomend the Michel Legrand 'Twenty Songs Of The Century' album from 1974.

It's an album of Legrand's arrangements of what he considered to be 20 standards, starting with 'St. Louis Blues' from 1917 and concluding with 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' from 1970. The arrangements are fantastic, and anything but conservative, ranging from very sparse to very dense - if you like Legrand's soundtrack work from the period you'll more than likely love this album. The recording quality (not to mention the mastering) are also outstanding...easily some of the best sounding strings I've ever heard on a non-classical recording. It also features a number of fantastic jazz musicians including Ron Carter, Toots Thielmans, Grady Tate, Eddie Daniels and Marvin Stamm.

The real revelation in all of this is the quad mix - it was only released no SQ quad vinyl for about two minutes in 1974 on Bell Records, one of the labels that was merged to create Arista after Clive Davis took over that year. Arista adopted CD-4 as their quad vinyl standard a year later and this went out of print. The mix was done at Columbia studios in NYC by one of their quad supremos, Don Young, who also did a load of other fantastic quad mixes including Billy Joel's Streetlife Serenade (which AF put out), Chicago II (available in the Quadio box) and about 30 others including Edgar & Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, Jeff Beck Group and others. I don't know if this album was conceived as a quad release from the ground up but even if it wasn't it certainly sounds like it, such is the quality of the quad mix. Strings, brass and other instruments have call and response sections from one side of the room to the other, and on the track 'One Note Samba', there are at least 3 or 4 pianos arranged around the room, and when the song reaches its apex you feel like the piano notes are just cascading over you.

It's a real travesty that it's taken almost 45 years for this music to be heard the way it was meant to - kudos to Vocalion for digging this gem out of the Sony vaults and making it available in stunning sound quality at a bargain price.

Really enjoying the Deodato, Garfunkel and PPL discs. Any ideas (Simon) as to what the next releases will be or how far away?

Good to hear you like your purchases. :)

I visit their web site a few times weekly but apart from that, I have no idea. The company seems to have a Spring/Autumn release pattern. They may surprise us with a few more titles soon. I think the two Garfunkel titles have given them a lot more exposure so it will be interesting to see what show up next on their new release page.

I got the 2 Garfunkel titles and they're both superb, outstanding releases with care done all the way down the chain IMO. I'm very impressed with their price point and I wish them great success in getting these vintage quad mixes into the hands of fans again.
