If the Beatles "White Album" had been reduced to a single disc.

It's 1968, and the Beatles are about to release their new album. You have been asked to select the 14 tracks which will be included on the album. What would the album look like? (I got this idea from a Beatles web site.)

    Here are my selections:

    1.Back in the USSR
    2.Dear Prudence
    3.Glass Onion
    4.While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    5.Happiness is a Warm Gun
    6.Don't Pass Me By
7.Why Don't We Do it in the Road?

    1.Birthday
    2.Yer Blues
    3.Helter Skelter
    4.Not Guilty
    5.Sexy Sadie
    6.Savoy Truffle
7.Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey

Although the intent is fun, even joking about this kind of thing makes me nuts.

[Jokingly] "It's done! It's sold, it's the bloody Beatles; SHUT UP!" - Paul McCartney on his opinion on the length of Whitey......

    That's a pretty controversial selection!

Are you adopting the usual Beatles policy of putting one Ringo track on each album or do you really like Don't Pass Me By more than, say, I'm So Tired or I Will or Cry Baby Cry or Revolution 1?

I can see this thread spanning several pages!

Gees Mikey that's a bit tough!

Maybe a case of a senior member crapping on a regular member's thread!

Nah, this is a great thread. I've made a "single fantasy" in my mind of lot's of two-record sets. Problem with the White Album is that the songs I would pick are still too long to make a single LP, so to be fair and not cheat (by ignoring the rules of actual disc cutting) I gave it up...;)

I was going for a harder edged song selection. And yes, Ringo gets one song on the album.

"Goodbye" (the demo for Mary Hopkin) or "Good Night"? And for that matter, is your choice of "Revolution" the "Hey Jude" b-side or "Revolution 1"?

  15. Michael

    Michael I LOVE WIDE S-T-E-R-E-O!

It would be impossible for me to pick just 14.

Any idea why Goodbye was left off A3?? That song IMO is just perfect. Paul at his best....

    I AGREE!

Sexy Sadie and Cry, Baby, Cry do actually fit together and could be indeed be segued like this, although I know you were joking. It sounds like you used to do them like this when you were on the radio. Right? ;)

here's just one other guy's take that has been on the web for some time...
    http://www.friktech.com/btls/white.htm
    don't agree with him
    don't agree with mr. martin
    don't agree with mr. hoffman

agree with sckott and paul m.

    but more particularly....

while I think "revolver" could have cut out one of george's tunes (guess which one) , "the Beatles" (white album) cannot be whole without "savoy truffle". which I believe is better than "ob-la-di, ob-la-da", even though it (old, old) was a single (a good one).

Don't be cheap, don't go for an abridgment.

Don't have time to post my own list at the moment, but of those so far I'd have to go with Steve's choices - if only because he's the only one so far to include "I Will," which i think is one of the loveliest of their later tunes (yeah, even though Steve relegated it to the "bonus EP"). ;)

Due to unavoidable demand from... well-- no one, here's **my** shot at it...

    Side One:
    1. Back in the USSR
    2. Dear Prudence
    3. Glass Onion
    4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    5. I'm So Tired
    6. Blackbird
    7. Julia

    Side Two:
    1. Birthday
    2. Yer Blues
    3. Savoy Truffle
    4. Revolution I
    5. Helter Skelter
    6. Sexy Sadie
    7. Good Night

Strong songs, sequenced (largely in the order they appear on the final LP) for a smooth flow. (Though I'm sorry to leave off "I Will" and "Cry Baby Cry"...)

And as a final plus, it doesn't include that frickin' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"... :D

I love the demo version bootlegs of the "White Album"...much more compelling music.

It would have been a more interesting and more successful "Get Back"-type release, than "Let It Be" was as an official album. Maybe the mish-mash of "Abbey Road" wouldn't have been released too.

  23. I haven't looked at any other lists yet. I didn't move around any of the songs from the order in which they originally appeared, er, ah, you know what I mean. :)

    Side One
    1. Back In The USSR
    2. Dear Prudence
    3. Glass Onion
    4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    5. Martha My Dear
    6. I Will
    7. Julia

    Side Two
    1. Yer Blues
    2. Mother Nature's Son
    3. Everybody's Got Something To Hide...
    4. Sexy Sadie
    5. Helter Skelter
    6. Revolution 1
    7. Savoy Truffle

    I'd say leave it as it is, but it would have been interesting if the Beatles had put out a heavy rock album like this in 1968;

    Side One:
    1. Revolution (single version)
    2. Glass onion
    3. While my guitar gently weeps
    4. Happiness is a warm gun
    5. I'm so tired (heavy guitar version)
    6. Savoy truffle
    7. Why don't we do it in the road

    Side Two:
    1. Back in the USSR
    2. Yer blues
    3. Not Guilty
    4. Sexy Sadie
    5. Everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey
    6. Long long long
    7. Helter skelter

CHANGE IT TO 14 TRACKS? THE VERY SUGGESTION IS SACRILEGIOUS! NO 'EDIT' OF THIS GREAT ALBUM COULD EVER WORK...TO QUOTE MACCA: "IT'S THE BLOODY BEATLES WHITE ALBUM". I AGREE SO LET'S LEAVE IT ALONE!
