Did Keith sing any back up vocals on the '69 tour itself? Pretty sure all his vocals on YaYas are overdubs.

Edit: Okay, here he is singing some on 'Honky Tonk'...

The '67 European tour stuff sounds incredible too. Brian on organ ('Night Together') and sneery feedback guitar on 'Satisfaction'? And they're playing through Vox Supremes with the built-in distortion.

And looks like it had the craziest audiences in general (Altamont aside):

Yes. Even if you go back to 64, they really were quite good as a live band. They made a mess of Got Live if you Want It!, but there are many live and TV appearances available that show they were pretty tight from the beginning.

  6. This really is a fantastic double album -it's my favorite Stones album, followed close by Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed and Beggar's Banquet.. Sure, there are 2-3 songs that are not exceptional, but most of these songs are excellent, varied, and were not overplayed on the radio back in the day. The two songs that did get tons of radio play (Tumbling Dice and Happy) are strong enough that they survived the overplay and I can still enjoy listening to them. The last great album of that excellent 4 album run. I enjoy several songs here and there on their later albums, and think Some Girls and Tattoo You are solid albums in their later period catalog.

    I chose as favorites:
    Rock's Off
    Rip This Joint
    Tumbling Dice
    Sweet Virginia
    Happy
    All Down The Line

I have the Virgin remaster and I am quite Happy with it.

I like L.A., Oakland, San Diego & Boston to name a few from memory but do not forget Altamont was strong also, just check out Midnight Rambler for one!

One of the few albums where you feel like you're sitting there with the band.
It has that sort of intimacy.

Ah, that's too bad. That book looks snazzy.
Not like I need another version - I do have 4 different vinyl and 3 CD copies of it.

Yes I agree the book looks fantastic but buying expensive sub standard vinyl does not compute for me.
I will happily make do with my 3 Exile CD's and 8 (mostly very early) Vinyl copies.

  18. That's an advantage. Far less filler than most double albums.

If your looking for a killer show from the 72 tour there are many but the very best may have been the Philadelphia 7/21/72 1st show!

Absolutely stellar versions of Gimmie Shelter, Tumbling Dice and Rocks Off and many others! The Band is on fire!!!!

The Stones themselves must have thought so too because the 3 songs mentioned and a few more were picked to be on the live album that never was to be.

The show, or most of it is available in soundboard quality! Check it out!!!

I used to wonder what the love was for Exile. After 50+ times of listening, it represents the most diverse album they ever did IMO. There's rock, blues, pop, country, jazz and the kitchen sink. And probably at the peak of their skills as musicians. I do love it now but, some days I prefer Let it Bleed.

The greatest rock n roll record of all time? Yes.

My favorite tracks are Rocks Off and Torn & Frayed. Rocks Off is probably my favorite opening track of all time, a killer opener to this grimy masterpiece.

The original pressings always sound best, newer reissues of this album tend to have serious compression whereas the original has a charming air and punch.

Especially on songs like "Hip Shake", where yer given almost a cinema verite peek at the Stones screwing around in the studio. They would include these kinds of tracks on a few subsequent albums.
Very true. Most double albums feel "bloated". Not Exile. It's more like, sixty seven minutes, and "What, you mean it's over already?":D
    A-friggin'-men to all of that!

Ok, perhaps I was too harsh in my criticism of "Rocks Off". It's actually a pretty good rocker. The rest of the songs I don't like on Exile, I still don't like though. [he says. with a smile]. :)
