I posted this in the History Of The Compact Disc thread but wanted to give it its own thread, too.

Frank would fit right in here- he already had 80 CDs by 1984- pretty impressive considering their cost, the cost of the player, and the limited selection available at the time.

1985, not 1984. The guy was a Kate Bush fan and I saw Hounds of Love in there (released in the fall of 1985).

    :)

I wonder if Frank has gone back to preferring vinyl?

This report reminded me of the current PBS Newshour (which I really enjoy but will admit is dry). All it needed was more shots of the business guys walking briskley to or at work or other such "action shots" (they had some for Frank).

  4. No he went for the digital download even though it's lossy. He likes the sizzle of those mp3's

I wonder is he still has that rockin' dew? ;)

He actually bought CD's before he bought his first CD player. He must be a member here.....

Frank mentioned nothing about dynamic range. :shake:

    ;)

In all seriousness, I enjoyed the video. I wonder how the guy's equipment and collection evolved over the years. If he kept his collection intact all these years I bet he's sitting on a gold mine of forum favorites.

  8. Cool clip, wish we could go back to the days of decent hair cuts too.

I wander if he changes the haircut? :)

    Nostalgia...

But seriously it's amazing how new technology changed our lives in such a short period of time.

I love the little blurb on the seemingly endless dynamic range achievable by CDs. Fast-forward 15 years......

I had The Hounds Of Love on vinyl back then. Now I have it on my hard drive.
Think I bought my first cd in 86. I never had that hair style though.

  12. If you check the web, you'll find out that Frank Maiale went on to become involved in audio and video engineering, and worked at Sonic Foundry for a time. He was diagnosed with early-stage Hodgkin's Lymphoma ten years ago, but appears to still be around, and is now also involved in cycling and the Wisconsin Historical Society. From the photo on his Facebook page, it looks like his hairstyle has changed considerably...

Yup. Back then, of course, no one cared about that. They were the first and only pressings available at the time. Still, it would have been great to have been buying CDs back then. I didn't get into it until '87.

He is purusing the first UK edition of Kate Bush's "Lionheart" in the clip while "The Hounds Of Love" is playing in the background.
I also see a lot of UK and European CDs in the rack.
He must have been a regular in the import sections.

Anyone notice that Frank's stereo setup appeared to be in a basement? Concrete walls, high windows.

The DADC guy was interesting - especially his comment about using compression, etc. for recordings on vinyl. No need to do that with the compact disc. I wonder what he would say about that today?

Just remember this clip, the next time you're being sold on the latest STUFF. :nyah:
I believe it's bluray dvd...or has that already failed? Maybe it's the i-techno gadgets of tomorrow today.

CDs have had quite a long healthy run, and we could argue that without CDs there would be no DVD, SACD, Blu-ray, etc.

Not sure how "healthy" it was. ;)
