For those of you with your collections in iTunes, I found the easiest way to rank was to create a new playlist and add 1 track from all of the albums I felt were under consideration. Then I dragged them up or down in the playlist according to taste until I had my top 100. I then selected the entire playlist in iTunes, copied it and pasted it into textedit. Finally I did a find and replace, replacing the default (.) with (-) and I had a formatted list.

This thread makes me think that I'd like to see one where everyone just lists 100 names, either of people or bands. That way we wouldn't have to exclude artists that didn't make albums (e.g. Louis Armstrong), it would be easier to make composers or songwriters part of the list (e.g. Cole Porter, Mozart or combos like Rogers and Hammerstein who didn't record), and classical performers would also be included without confusion (e.g. Glenn Gould, Vladimir Horowitz). Plus, bands could be listed separately from their members (e.g. John Lennon, The Beatles).

This was really tough. At first I tried to include jazz artists and Frank Sinatra, but it was just too apples and oranges with the rock artists. If I had included jazz artists, John Coltrane's Giant Steps would have been number one, and most of the top twenty would have been jazz albums.

Glad to see another forum legend participate! The above are examples of bands I've always heard of, but don't know their stuff. Some I've never heard of, but highly ranked in some polls. So much to learn. I'm paying attention to these lists for stuff like that.

Only a few more days for other forum faves to chime in...

Yeah, it would be neat to see Steve's list, but 'm guessing he has more important things to do.

Why don't Internet dating services work on this sort of survey instead of those silly personality profiles?

    Mine neither :)
Interesting to consider that the Clash and Bruce would probably be near the top of her list as well, so maybe there's something to that internet dating survey idea.

I heard Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" on the radio last night, and remembered the time when Hounds of Love was an album that was in constant rotation at my house. But it's not on my list. That's why these are so hard to compile. I think I sold a lot of my 80s favorites short and deferred to the established 60s and 70s classics. But that is part of what these lists are about - albums that have truly stood the test of time. I think that there are a lot of 80s albums such as the Cure's Disintegration and Depeche Mode's Violator that are doing just that, and probably should have made my list. Oh well.

Also, and I'm sort of ashamed to admit this, I listened to Rickie Lee Jones' debut for the first time ever last night, and that is probably one of the 100 best pop/rock albums I've ever heard. But, again, not on my list. No matter how into music you are, it's impossible to keep up with everything. I've only recently really begun to explore the Genesis catalog, and they're another band that I overlooked.
