Something a bit different this week - I've chosen 25 seminal DEBUT albums by artists that could fall under the category of "new wave/punk/alternative" for the latter part of the 1970's, mostly from the years 1977 - 1979.
Obviously many had to left off due to the 25 poll choice limit, and there's a few debuts from this time frame that I just don't care for much <The Jam, for instance> and left off, so here's what we have.
Comment freely, as always, and I'm SURE I left off some really great debut lps from this time period, so let me know.
Pick up to 8 of your favorites from the list if you can, and remember - try and have some fun - put one of these albums on and listen...again. It was a great time for new music!

Boy, I REALLY don't think Kate Bush belongs on this list. I love the album, and I voted for it because it was on the list. But it's in no way punk or new wave. Art rock, perhaps. But right era, wrong genre.

Hmmm, tougher than usual; took me a long time to warm up to most of this...

    Ramones - The Ramones
    B-52's - B-52's
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
    Clash - The Clash
    Joe Jackson - Look Sharp!
    Pretenders - The Pretenders
Talking Heads - Talking Heads '77
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True

Lowe, Costello and Blondie battled for last place. Elvis FTW.

You're probably right, but as I recall at the time she was marketed that way, at least in the USA. Oh well...good call, though!

The only reason I DIDN'T vote for Wire or the Ramones is that I prefer Chairs Missing and Rocket To Russia to their debuts

    Ramones
    Sex Pistols
    Joe Jackson
    Nick Lowe
    Police
    The Cars
    Elvis Costello
    Devo

I bought all of these and more on the list. I had The Jam debut, loved the songs hated the vocals. I always knew Paul Weller could sing and he proved it later.

I had the Devo debut from the UK on Virgin, it came with two posters and was on yellow vinyl. I sold it for $50 years ago. The cover was different than the US version.

  9. I could have chosen so many other deserving ones, but I struggled to get it down to those, that for me, towered above even the other great albums here...

    Television - Marquee Moon
    Ramones - The Ramones
    Gang Of Four - Entertainment!
Nick Lowe - Jesus Of Cool/Pure Pop For Now People
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
    Specials - The Specials
    Clash - The Clash
    Pretenders - The Pretenders
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True

Nice to hear from you again, buddy. It's been a while. Only poll-busting by 1 title? I must be slipping... ;)

    Specials

Maybe because the B-52's debut was *that much better* than Joy Divisions? And I'm old enough to have bought them when they came out. Hilarious, yeah.

In all fairness, this forum is not an "alternative" music forum by definition, but more of a "classic rock/sound quality" somethingorother, so, I guage my poll entries with this in mind. If JD get any votes at all, I count myself lucky.
But how could I not include such a fantastic debut album? ;)

No offence, but taking your reply generically, I wish I could turn you on to some of the albums you dismissed out of hand because you haven't heard them. You just might find that there's some "gold in them thar hills", as they say.

I went for Marquee Moon, Never Mind the Bollocks, The Clash, The Modern Dance, Damned, Damned, Damned, Unknown Pleasures and The Crack. Hated to leave the Stranglers, Ramones and Buzzcocks off the list, though!

Rocket To Russia is like a hit factory. Every song is really well known.

Their first five albums were loaded with hits. The only problem was, nobody got to hear them at the time.

If I was going for a "best album" by these artrists, I would agree 100%.

That's a different poll, though. No wait! I don't want anyone to copy my polls, heaven forbid.;)

Let's leave my avenues open as much as we can, shall we?

Great list! Of my picks, the following artists get special kudos for opening my (then) teenage mind to the sounds of punk and new wave:

    Pretenders
    The Clash
    Elvis Costello
    The Police
    Joe Jackson

Some of these results really surprise me - only 6 votes for the Strangler's Rattus Norvegicus? Also surprised Costello's My Aim Is True got so many votes (my least favourite early Costello). Even though it's one of my all time faves, I didn't vote for Kate Bush because I also felt it didn't belong here. All of these records are great though a few key albums are missing (SLF's Inflammable Material, Slits' Cut, + a few others)
