5.1 audio is okay, but I don't think we're there yet

I have a 5.1 system and have a handful of titles but I rarely listen to them. I just don't think hi-rez surround is the ultimate home listening experience, something even better must surely be coming. I think hi-rez in concert with Ambisonics might be the ultimate "holographic" audio. Or, maybe it's time for a speaker upgrade? My speakers are Optimus LX-5's, original models, an Atlantic Tech sub, Optimus center, and Sony DVD/SACD player. If I upgraded my speakers to, say, Axiom Audio, might I be more convinced of the sonic virtues of 5.1 music? But again, I feel the ultimate audio experience could be 3D sonics from two speakers that project sound images where no speakers are at all.
