  2. I suspect there's a wee bit of nostalgia associated with some of these movies. I always hated "Blood on Satan's Claw" as a kid I didn't think it was all that great.

Sure, nostalgia plays a huge part - but this is one of my favourite film in any genre.

I'll have to think about the others to round out my top 5....

(If we count mini series, I would've seriously considered Salem's Lot, but I wouldn't know which one to replace.)

    Dracula (the Frank Langella one)
    Salem's Lot
    House of Dark Shadows
    Squirm

Great lists so far. Lots of fantastic films. I'll throw Last House on the Left in the mix.

Yeah. One has a "director's cut" using lower quality footage. Not horrible though during the 15 or so minutes.

    Lower quality"?
Think that's the Christopher Lee scene, doesn't really add anything. I like the theatrical cut.

I watched the original Wes Craven Last House On The Left (1972) first-run at a small
'country' theater in Allegheny County, Maryland with an all-African American audience.
It really doesn't get any better than that for a '70s horror movie experience' for my money.

  16. Great thread as I'm a big 70's horror guy.

Doubt I can limit it to five but Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a must.

Contains three different cuts: UK theatrical cut (88 minutes), director's cut (100 minutes), and The Final Cut (93 minutes), plus a soundtrack CD. Currently on sale for just £9.99 at both Amazon UK and HMV.

It is. I've owned multiple releases of this film over the years, and the current UK Blu-ray package blows them all away.

I think there were quite a few Hammer ones that were great in the early 70's, but I'm more into ""classic horror, not splatter movies.
