Do you have plans to do any more 50th anniversary remix versions of the later albums? “I don’t know. We’re so wary. I speak to Paul or Olivia Harrison or Ringo and Yoko [Ono] about this.We all talk about what's the right thing to do morally. It's not a question of keeping the brand going or shifting units. Luckily, it's a very small unit. Things go through me, especially now my father's passed away. This has been incredibly well-received so far. There's so much love for it that if people want it... I mean, The White Album turns 50 next year which, to be honest, I'd love to have a go at mixing.” Giles Giles Martin reveals how he remastered Sgt. Pepper for its 50th anniversary
Assuming it's going to be released in a remixed form (if the 50th is even going to happen), a lot of questions arise. Which version - mono or stereo - will they choose for reference, and will they do it for entire album or go song by song? With Sgt. Pepper remix it was "easier" choice to aim for the mono mixes (even if in the end they missed a bunch of things from the original mono versions), but what about this one? Hey Bulldog and Across the Universe? And Not Guilty as well then, it was a completed recording after all.
They should. It's like 'Strawberry Fields' and 'Penny Lane' for Sgt Pepper. Maybe 'Hey Bulldog' should be part of such a box, too.
Based on what happened with Pepper, I don't think so. The Pepper Box included outtakes of SFF and Penny Lane on the basis that they were at one time considered for inclusion on the album. I don't think the two 1968 singles were ever considered part of the White Album, although I would gladly take any two of those songs in exchange for #9 being left off. I don't think we'll see Not Guilty either, as Giles made a comment about Harrison's Northern Song not being on the Pepper Box because he "didn't want to celebrate the fact that it was left off the album." And Not Guilty would probably follow the same sort of pattern. All the same I would have loved Not Guilty and Revolution (single version) to take the place of #9. I love Angelo's idea of including the electric and acoustic versions of WMGGW on the album -- both are so different and done so well that they really merit inclusion. After the 1990s "MTV Unplugged" era, I noticed that it was not unusual for bands to include acoustic demos of songs on EPs or as "extra" album tracks, but I don't think anybody was doing that back in 1968.
For me, it's the best album from the best band of all time. I love Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, Sexy Sadie, Cry Baby Cry, and many others. It's just so good.
Thank you PJ for laying the text groundwork. Favourite songs: - Dear Prudence - I'm So Tired The tracks that like: - Back In The USSR - Glass Onion - While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill - Martha My Dear - Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Yoko - Sexy Sadie - Why Don't We Do It In The Road - Cry Baby Cry - Revolution 9 - Helter Skelter - Savoy Truffle -(I wish Mary Jane was on here) The tracks that I don't really like: - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - Piggies - Rocky Racoon - Don't Pass Me By - Revolution 1 - Honey Pie - Blackbird
I'd say it's not quite the same. Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields have more of a connection to Sgt. Pepper than the four 1968 songs have with the White Album. As for Hey Bulldog, Only a Northern Song wasn't included with Pepper so I'm not sure how likely that is.
Definitely my favorite Beatles album. A favorite memory is, after hearing the single Revolution for years on the Blue album and the radio, hearing the laid back, groovy Revolution 1. The opening double drum thwack of Glass Onion is one of the coolest Beatles moments. And the mixture of the USSR plane into the opening acoustic guitar of Dear Prudence. Never gets old.
Ranked from most likely to least likely, here's the non-White Album songs that I can see being included in a potential set. 1. Hey Jude and Revolution 2. Lady Madonna and The Inner Light 3. Songs that were rehearsed but never appeared on the album (Not Guilty, What's the New Mary Jane, etc.) 4. Hey Bulldog and Across the Universe
I don't believe the Anthology version was, but the album version was released as a single in several markets [including the US & Canada in 1976 for some reason].
My favourite album of theirs and my favourite album of all time. I love the diversity and remember playing it backwards repeatedly after reading a newspaper article regarding the Paul is dead rumours. Boy did it captivate me and scare the crap out of me at the same time! I really hope the White Album receives a deluxe treatment this year. I think it could really bring out a different dimension to the music that is worth listening to. Of all The Beatles albums, I think this one would benefit most for both a stereo and a 5.1 remix. John really shined on this album and Ringo's drumming was so powerful. Wish he had played on all the tracks! My go to versions are as follows: Vinyl - 1978 UK white vinyl and the 1985?
