Wow!!! Man, some people need to lighten up just a bit, don't ya think!!! So a B&W photo shouldn't be colourized. By that logic a colour photo shouldn't be processed as a B&W? Seriously?

To OP thanks for posting link, really enjoyed seeing iconic photos in another way. Cheers.

NB guess I need to undo the processing on my avatar!!!

Most of these are pretty neat, but I think the article is misleading in saying that color photography was rare until the 1970s. Several of the subjects in these pictures has actual color photographs taken during their lifetime.

Some of these are very nice, very natural. Some look too much like a painting or otherwise look artificial. A little bit of a mixed bag, but on the whole the collage is interesting...

Pretty cool and someone spent a looong time doing this.

Most look very good and only a few bloopers.

Yep. First thing that came to mind when I read that were Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii's amazing color photographs of the pre-WW1 Russian Empire. They are over 100 years old and if you've never seen them before, be prepared to have your expectations adjusted regarding "old photos":

Most of these photos are pretty well done. But I wonder about the lack of appreciation for black and white. Do people just prefer color? Do people look at black and white as a defect that needs to be corrected like those colorized b/w classics?

I certainly don't see it that way, though some might. I think from an artistic standpoint, b&w and color are like apples and oranges, both offering unique characteristic and advantages depending on the aesthetic goal.
But from the standpoint of pure realism, it's hard to argue that color isn't closer to our perceived reality than b&w. So I think the point of these photos is simply to make the past appear more realistic and tangible to our senses.

I recently has some old black and white photos colorized by a company called Phojoe. Here is a photo of my father (front) in the middle of combat at Okinawa on May 4th 1945.
