I saw quite a few 3D led TVs at Costco for under $1200.00 this morning. Most were 60" or more, that's a good sign for those who were thing about buying one down the road.
I paid a lot more than that for my Panasonic Plasma 3D TV in 2011.
More and more movies are coming out on Blu-ray 3D everyday and the kids really love their cartoons in 3D.
Here's a list of the most recent 100 3D movies released.

  3. As soon as the Samsung I bought four years ago starts having any issues, in the bedroom it goes and I'll happily buy a 3D TV.

No one cares. 3D in the home is dead. 4K is what's happening.

Even in the case of 4K, I'm not convinced there's a huge audience for it yet. And that you can watch anywhere in your room, no glasses, lying down or sitting up, and while walking around.

Having said that: I saw Dolby's non-glasses 3D TV system at NAB a week or two ago, and it wasn't bad.

Are all these movies better in 3D?

If the films are designed for 3D yes. I find the glasses are a bit of eyestrain though. Also the picture is darker.

Tell my goofy brother that, who is 16 years older than me and I'm 53! I tried to tell him that the 3D craze is over, yet every week he buys more and more titles on blu-ray! The other day he handed me three brand new releases on blu-ray, that are in 3D and while he knows that I have a VT-50 Panasonic plasma 3D TV, I told him that I've never once used the 3D option yet, while watching it and I don't plan to!

3D is the weirdest thing in my opinion, as in my case, I have a brother in his 60's who loves it and evidently thinks that he is re-living his younger days at the drive-in or something and then you have my best friend who won't even THINK about watching a movie in 3D, because he has gotten sick so many times from old 3D movies in the 70's and 80's. I personally have always felt that 3D is a silly concept, good, bad or ugly, on any screen.

Of course, I was a fan of Universal's "Sensurround", so what do I know, right?

I, too (like Chris C) have a 3D television that I use exclusively as a standard monitor. I understand the appeal of 3D in a theater but I can't bring myself to feel any enthusiasm for the home 3D experience.

Same here. BZync.! I watch films on a 65" LCD (with 3D capability!) and every other whizz-bang feature. Yet I never feel the need to watch a movie in 3-D even if the Blu Ray edition I brought, has also included that feature on one of its multi discs. If we go back to the 50's when 3 -d movies were a 'craze'....... theatrers then used - 2 strong projectors to project the screened image. The audiences wore issused glasses that were 'light poloroid' Seeing some of the murky-lit films today with dark night and forest scenes on a home screen , one becomes incredulous - how it must look through dark 3-D glasses.
What I find surprising is with some DVDs and Blu Ray discs, if one has the time to waste and experiment.... by throwing on, the conversion switch for a 2-D to 3 -=D ' presentation.... sometimes it gives what appears to be a good impression of 3 -D.

The one BIG stumbling block with 3-D presented films is a simple one.
The question begging to be asked : "Does the plot keep continually supporting the need for a 3-D image to carry what it is trying to present ?.
Even in the old 50's days , the big problem was "With the 3-D effects... people appearing to jump out of the screen , throw things at the viewer, jab at the audience etc etc etc....how many times could any film use the 3-D trick device -before they starting yawning and thinking it is a sick joke. to cover up a bad plotted film?"

My new 4k TV came with a pair of active 3D glasses but they're still in the box and likely to stay there for a while. I imagine I'll try a few movies at some point but it was surely not a priority when buying the TV.

Part of the problem is that you can't really watch it in the background as you need the glasses. Trying to do something else while watching would seem to be problematic. Also if you're watching something in 3D everybody has to have the glasses or it's not really watchable. There is no 2D compatibility that I'm aware of.

One only has to read the run-down of 3-D films currently available as well as other similar proposed future releases, supplied at the start of this discussion. It amusingly stands as undeniable evidence that Hollywood in this day and age, is only interested in mostly cinematic 3-D gilded garbage, that is sure to appeal to the brain dead and intellectually illiterate..

Yes, ALL movies are better in 3D! The depth adds realism that draws the viewer deeper into the story. (notice I worked that word deeper in there?) However, making a film in 3D isn't going to keep a stinker movie with a stinker plot from being a stinker.

Try it, maybe you'll like it! You don't even have to pay extra if you're brother's loaning you 3D blu-rays.

Their mostly interested in cinematic garbage anyway. I actually like some very bad 3-D movies, just so long as they're fun and have fun with 3-D. I think a good movie like HUGO or LIFE OF PI is enhanced by 3-D, but again both of those movies actually have fun with and acknowledge that they're in 3-D. Just adding it to a good or bad movie doesn't help, but actually using it in fun ways can improve a good or a bad 3-D movie. In my opinion, of course.

Too bad "Noah" wasn't released in 3D, even if it was poorly converted to 3D the movie would have gained a level of watchability. While the acting was generally not too bad, there was no compelling reason for the movie's existence (yes, I realize that applies to approximately 97.2869% of current movies...except maybe for the "acting was generally not too bad" part).

Not every movie needs 3D, but when it is well thought through and well executed it strongly adds to a compelling movie experience. While, for me at least, if a movie is not that great ("Three Musketeers"), well done 3D, even poorly done 3D, can have me paying exorbitant money for popcorn and coming early for a good seat.

3D at home is a different experience in a way, but I buy, and watch, every 3D blu-ray that makes sense to me. While 3D at home doesn't have the sheer scale of 3D in a theater, it has a crystalline clarity to its Blu-ray depth that can be absolutely stunning.

You know, I think it works well in certain extremely controlled situations, and I think 3D is appropriate for a big, sprawling epic film in a huge theater. I can't deny that 3D added a lot to films like Avatar, Hugo, and Gravity, and I wouldn't be surprised if the 3D showings were responsible for at least an extra 25-30% of the box office. Movies like that are spectacles. Everything else... not so much.

And the problem in the home is, if you're a little off-angle, the 3D effect diminishes, the glasses are a drag, the phone rings and you have to get it, people walk around you, the kids are playing with a video game off in the corner, light's spilling in from a window on the right... it's a mess. If you're willing to jump through hoops, it is possible to create an "inner sanctum" inside your house that's basically purpose-built to do one thing -- show movies -- but very few people have the money and inclination to build a home theater from scratch with controlled lighting and 100% of their time and energy focused on the screen. It's not for casual viewing, and I think 90% of most people multitask so much, they're sending texts, they're surfing the web, they're eating a cheeseburger, they're on the phone, all while they're watching a movie or TV show at home. And that's cool -- I understand people have (and sometimes need) these distractions. It's just not ideal for 3D video.

It's stunning if you can overlook how damned dark it is.

Perhaps it's my set (a 55 inch Sony LCD), I don't know, the darkness is not my experience in the slightest.

    How was the set calibrated?

While I understand you may well have proper and justified misgivings to my approach, and while due to the limited settings available for 3D use in comparison to settings for 2D use (making 3D viewing less of a calibration issue per se), I'll give you an overview.

I underwent no professional calibration--oh the humanity!

I made use of the "DVE HD Basics" Blu-ray...and over the course of several months made use of my photographic eye (I've worked in both film and digital, starting in, call it, 1965; for a while did my own color darkroom work as well as black and white darkroom work; possess, and use, separate 35mm and 120 roll film scanners; and currently shoot with a Nikon D800) to tweak things to my complete agreement.

No, I wouldn't recommend my approach for many, but I am extremely satisfied with the viewing on my set.

Eh, it's still dark. I think there are good reasons why consumer 3D failed so miserably. I think if you can afford to overcome all the limitations, it can work to some degree, but the loss of more than 50% of screen brightness in the glasses (active shutter or polarized) is very hard to overcome. Imax is doing it with double-stacked 2K projectors, so at least they start out with 28fL of brightness, then lose about 2/3 of it in the glasses, but the result is still a picture much darker than a normal theatrical image.

There's no hope for a single home screen, because LCD and plasma can only pump out so much light before they clip. I have no philosophical problem with 3D, and I think it can work well under optimum circumstances. But I don't think the vast number of everyday people can handle it because it requires too much effort: precise viewing position, light controlled, no distractions, etc.

I also see 3D as quickly disappearing from the latest home video monitors. 4K is being pushed real hard, but I'm not convinced that's gonna be a big success, either. At least 4K can sorta/kinda work, provided they come up with a realistic delivery method.

I think that few movies would actually benefit from 3-D and it's no substitute for story.

That's only true if you are viewing on an LCD display. A plasma set with active glasses suffers from almost no light loss at the extreme edges of the viewing angle. The 3D effect does flatten out the farther off axis you get though. This is true in theater viewings as well. The farther forward in the theater you sit, or off-axis you sit, the depth effect diminishes. Sitting farther back, on axis will increase the depth effect.

Nah, it's easy to fix. Place your set in your finished basement, and your lighting problems are much fewer. For 3D viewings, it really helps to turn off the lights. My finished basement came with the house. Your mileage may vary.
