The electronic drums scream 80s. Love that tune though.

Electronic drums weren't the only hallmark of 80's production (and I suspect that what some listeners identify as such are actually regular drums with gated reverb and other popular effects of the time). Airy digital reverb, DX7 synth sounds, noise gating on the vocals, compression on the bass guitar, digital delay all over the guitar - all peg that song as firmly in 1986-89.

I was expecting an interesting thread, but everybody seems to be posting stuff that is infused in '80s sound. "Kokomo" sounding like the '60s, really? What have you people been drinking? :unhunh:

Went through my entire collection and couldn't find anything. Lots of examples actually, but none were hits. Maybe the only one that qualifies is Violent Femmes' "Blister In The Sun". Dunno if that one was a hit, but it sounds more like '90s MTV-unplugged style than '80s.

Manic Monday has always sounded like a 90s song.

Perhaps not to people hearing it in 1987?

Joe Dolce Music Theatre - "Shaddup You Face" (1981) sounds like it could have been popular in 1968 when artists like Tiny Tim and John Fred and His Playboy Band were the rage with the long-hairs.

Just a song that didn't move me much either way; definitely not "90s" though :)

Well, I guess in 1987 no one knew what the 90s "sounded" like, so that would make sense...but the production style was used in 90s a LOT.

"Dirty old town" & "Fairytale of New York" doesn't sound like the 80's. The Pogues had fantastic non-80's production.

One listen to that Long After Dark album (e.g.; "You Got Lucky") is like taking a time machine back to the decade.

I can think of some 80's music that sound outside of the period, but combine that with "hits" and it gets real tough.

Maybe this one, assuming we consider it a "hit"?

If '65 Love Affair by Paul Davis didn't have the synths in the recording, it could have been recorded in the mid 1960s.

This should be a SHORT Thread :D

Your post of the Cowboy Junkies' version of "Sweet Jane" was the only one I read so far that doesn't sound like it was produced in the 1980s... probably because of the way it was recorded "live" at the Trinity Church.

And "The Trinity Session" is a timeless album, both because of the music itself, and because it doesn't carry the baggage of 80s production "values"... :righton:

Like a current pop hit.

As someone who grew up in the '80s all the '80s hit sound like the '80s to me.
