OK, Appetite might have a bit of an '80s drum sound... but far less than most '80s hard rock.

I guess it didn't become a hit 'til the '90s, but "About a Girl" by Nirvana was recorded and released in the '80s. And it does not sound '80s at ALL in my opinion.

I think it's also reasonable to say that "Trouble" and "Holiday Road" by Lindsey Buckingham really could've been from any decade from the '50s through now.

I also think that "That's Why They Call It The Blues" by Elton John doesn't necessarily sound '80s either, but maybe I'll get some pushback on that one.

And lastly, "Should I Stay or Should I Go" by The Clash. I think if somebody didn't know better they could mistake it for the '70s.

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

Heh! I guess I never listened too closely to the song. I was never a big fan of it.

    Not with all those keyboards.

How about "Tell her About It"? It's kind of close to 60s Motown, but people always tried to emulate the stereo mixes, not the mono mixes that were actually the hits.

Interesting...I kind of agree with the poster...not necessarily an 80's sounding production. Very nice sounding indeed and a great recording. Walk Like an Egyptian....very strong 80's vibe! I think Manic stands out on the album as not sounding as 80's as the rest.

Yup....and I loved it all if it was done right. A lot of it was pretty bad though. I love Amy Grant but wow her stuff sounds very dated for that reason.

And don't get me started on that Kenny G-style sax solo. If that sounds like the '60s to you, I don't know what to say.

Agreed. It sounds a lot like a track from the '70s. The title track from "Pipes of Peace" doesn't have much of an '80s sound either. "Say, Say Say" on the other hand... :sigh:

Yeah, that track sounds pretty neutral. The only thing is that the piano, while an acoustic piano, has a pretty bright tone to it and was recorded to sound more like a piano synth than Elton's earlier stuff. That's just what I hear.

What about anything by Squeeze? They have always sounded more like the '90s to me, but that might just be because they got heavy airplay on the AAA station when I was a teen in the '90s. Still, no cheesy synths, no electronic drums or gated snare (so far as I remember). To me, their sound is not really dated at all.

The "new traditionalists" in the country music field, like Ricky Skaggs and Dwight Yoakum. Most other commercial country music of the '80s was moving toward the formulaic pop with a twang that's passing for country music today.

This thread is funny because they all sound so 80s to me. Even when the song is not written or performed in a style most associate with the 80s... the keyboard sounds, the drums, the guitars, the reverb... it's all so 80s to me.
