Back then, vinyl first and foremost. I did not like CDs when they came but I was forced to adapt to it because LPs disappeared from record stores. Now I have a record collection with 80s music on both CDs and vinyl, as I've bought as much 80s music after the 80s.

all three of course, why limit yourself? I listened to as much music as I could get my hands on. in the 80's no cd's for me though, I was botn in 1976...

I'm confused. You say all three of course followed by you saying you didn't use CDs.

Vinyl (often taped on cassette) and sometimes CDs.

    All of them.

I didn't get a CD player until 1985, but I chose that as my preference. For me they were the best way to listen to music. Still are.

I had records of course. They were a lot easier (and cheaper) to get hold of in the 80s than CDs. People would kill for the vinyl choices we had then now!

Cassettes I had fads on. Their was a time in the 80s when they were the biggest format. Aside from their compactness and the fact you could play them on the move, it's hard to see why now. I never seemed to do well with tapes. They always went 'muffled' on me. Roll on the invention of the iPod.:D

Mostly vinyl, but nearing the late 80's I started listening to some CD's

Some vinyl, but mostly cassettes. they were small and so easy to transport between my car and boom box. I rocked the cassettes in my car, well into the 90's.

Primarily cassette, with mainly vinyl for roughly pre-1980 music. I LOVED the sound of a cassette transfer of a vinyl record, and then taking that new cassette transfer in my cassette walkman as I passed solitary hours walking the neighborhood. Between about '87 and '89, I slowly changed to Cds.

All formats, because some music is only on one format, plus I listen to files a lot (am ripping vinyl right now).

Picked vinyl but listened on Vinyl cassette and starting in November 1986 cds. All three mediums were absorbed during big 80's.

All three. Once I bought a CD player summer of '86, that became my preferred medium but I didn't stop buying vinyl or making mix tapes on cassette. For me, there was always something great about all three formats.

If it was available on CD, I bought it that way, but still bought vinyl if it was something I really wanted and there was no CD.

It was exclusively vinyl, then we would do college dorm party mixes to cassette.

Good point, I also hated pre recorded cassettes but liked making mix tapes and recording off the radio on them.

I got my first CD player in 1985, so vinyl and CD. A few stray cassettes, though I made lots of "mix tapes".

Me too! Vinyl ripped to cassettes. For portability and to have a bunch of pristine, once-played LPs in 2016. Didn't get one of them new-fangled disc players 'til 1990.

:chill::kilroy:I myself would tape my vinyls to cassettes during the first 7 years of the 80's to preserve the vinyl.

I still have two worn but playable cassettes from March 1986 & March 1987.

If you count the whole decade, I used all three. Overall, I would say cassettes. I got my first cassette in 1980, REO Speedwagon - Hi Infidelity. :)
