I remember one very long, acapella song that ruined the album for me. It was hideous.

I love the fact that there is a wide variety of music on this chart. You have country, r&b. yacht rock, new wave, and heavy metal(if you consider AC/DC heavy metal).

You must hear Hack - totally brilliant. And the whole album really flows together, so best to listen as the whole album, not just cuts here and there. I like Hack much more than the debut (and that in no way diminishes the debut at all!)
You're correct on the lyrics, and they do make me cringe. I guess I just like the overall mood of the song. I also like their EMI debut from 1986, White Fields. I bought the download from their site a couple years ago, but was disappointed that it is just a poor vinyl rip.

I like it too. It's a pop song, not, like, Robert Frost. It doesn't have to be a brilliant piece of poetry. I'm sure the lyrics resonated with a lot of people, just like Ghost did, or it wouldn't have been a Top 10 hit. In its own way, it's quite an unusual form of love song; it's a conceit (dead guy speaking to alive lover) you don't often find in Top 10 pop hits. But the fact that it had Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore connotations was a serious bonus.

Listened to it yesterday on Spotify. It is brilliant, for sure. :agree: It does have the feel of a really cool DJ set, the way it's sequenced. It's certainly a step up from the first album, even if it doesn't quite have a track as immediate as, or with the pop thrills of, "What's On Your Mind".

From this motley crew of songs, in my collection are #12, 30, 32, 38, and 47. At one time or another, I once also had #6 (was disappointed it wasn't the Dion doo-wop classic), 7, 10, and 26.

There is a reason #46 (whose chorus I can hear in my head every so often to this day) has two labels listed. When first issued, it was on United Artists, but as it was climbing the charts Capitol's rights to the UA name expired (not unlike Polydor viz MGM in 1976), and the record was transferred to a renamed Liberty label. #4 was possibly the first 45 issued after the point of the label name change.

    As for the rest, I clearly recall #1 - 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, 14 - 16, 18 - 20, 21 (I list this by itself because nobody, I.M.H.O., topped The Righteous Brothers'), 22, 23, 25, 27 - 29, 31, 34, 39, and 60. (Believe it or not, I don't think I've actually heard Mr. Richard's third-biggest U.S. hit that charted here at #13, I may do so over the weekend.)

Is The Pointer Sister's 'He's So Shy' a cover of The Chiffons' hit song? I've never heard the song but I recognize the title.

Anyway my favorite songs on the chart are Barbra's, Stevie's, Queen's, 'Never Knew Love Like This' and both tracks by Miss Ross. That's a great top 10 but it's all I'm familiar with on the chart :(.

No, a completely different number altogether. The Chiffons' number was "He's So Fine."

And I fired up a YT clip with "Dreamin'." Forgotten all about it, but once I played it, it immediately fired up memories of "back then."

Any 1980 chart will be stacked with great songs - Xanadu,Lady,Woman In Love,Games Without Frontiers

The Queen one is a favorite - 1980 was a great year for them + Crazy Little Thing Called Love

I don't have as much from this one...I was a bit younger, I guess. I have the following:
    Pat Benatar- Crimes of Passion
    Barbra Streisand- Guilty
    Billy Joel- Glass Houses
    Diana Ross- Diana

There are some other great tracks here but I think I only have them on various 'Best Of' compilations.

That's a brilliant top 15. The songs I don't love, I really like. I think my absolute favourite, however, is "Never Knew Love Like This Before": because (a) it's a song I've always loved; and (b) Reggie Lucas, the song's co-writer/producer, recycled elements of it for "Borderline", one of my top 2-3 Madonna songs, so listening to it is sort of like listening to "Borderline" too.

Nice to see @Surly's favourite Billy Joel was still pulling hits off 'An Innocent Man' almost a year and a half after it's release...

'Save A Prayer' on the chart almost 3 years after 'Rio's release???

2 Madonna songs in the top 10. She was really getting going now.

Not a bad chart actually. Great to see George Michael with two songs in that chart.

That's interesting, as it was (as you of course know) a solo George Michael song over here. Presume that was a US record company decision to credit it like this in order to shift more, George probably not having much of a standing in his own name at that point?

Were Wham! already big in America by this point? I know I've read a few people from the US in the last few days saying they regard him as more of a late 80s star.

The top 10 doesn't do much for me although I like Reo Speedwagon and Crazy For You

Some great ones from 11 - 40 starting with The Heat Is On at 11

    The cream for me

    Obsession
    Save A Prayer
    One Night In Bangkok
    Careless Whisper

I don't think Wham! really caught on in America until 1984. A good two years after they debuted here.

Maybe hedging their bets then, not sure whether Wham! or George solo was going to be the biggest banker, so stick both names on!

The early singles didn't chart but Wake Me Up was a #1 before Careless Whisper. Looking at the US charts I'm shocked that Last Xmas only made it to #50
