I expect it to be a real boring show this year even with Billy Crystal.

After seeing all the movies, Hugo really should win...it is spectacular.

I agree on all counts. The under 30 crowd with their blogs, twittering and on-line reviewing jobs will be merciless in persecuting "the old man".

Amazed at the love for "The Help" and "Moneyball" - average films at best.

I think Moneyball is the most over rated film of the year.....great little baseball film? yep. Very interesting movie to fans of the inside of the baseball world but Best Picture? I didnt think so.

AMC had their "Best Picture Showcase" for the last two Saturdays, showing all nine nominees. Some people even had a marathon screening yesterday for almost 24 hours. Those who were inclined were encouraged to rate the movies on a scale of 1 to 5 via text message, and AMC just sent out the results, which I was slightly surprised by:

    The Help - 4.5
    Hugo - 4.2
    War Horse - 4.2
    The Descendants - 4.1
    Moneyball - 4
    Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - 3.8
    The Artist - 3.7
    Midnight In Paris - 3.7
The Tree of Life - 1.6

People tweeted about "The Tree of Life" from all over, it was getting bad reactions everywhere. I will say that the crowd I sat with had almost no walk outs and kept good poker faces throughout before making it very obvious during the break that they were not pleased.

Ratings for "Midnight In Paris" and "The Artist" seem just about right, where people enjoyed them but felt their playful, light tone didn't have a "Best Picture" pedigree.

Overall, I was much less impressed with "The Help" and "War Horse" than I expected, but much more impressed with "Hugo" and "Extremely Loud". My opinions on these films really hung on how much I felt they pandered to the viewers. "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" seemed to walk a fine line, but I thought it ultimately treated the themes with respect, which surprised me because critics have been taking out a lot of anger on the film. "The Help" had some great performances and some really silly ones, hampered by a lack of focus and no real subtlety. "War Horse" was a nice craft piece with no heart at all. "Hugo" was the opposite. Both of those films had flaws, but it was much easier to overlook them with "Hugo," which was positively alive with the love of dreams and dreamers that Scorsese is celebrating.

Ultimately, "Moneyball" and "Hugo" were the films I liked the most overall. "Moneyball" gets plusses for being the most natural, economical and straightforward, but can seem a bit cold and mechanical. "Hugo" is whimsical and full of heart, but sometimes gets a bit silly, clunky and obvious.

Agreed. I'll watch, and I want Hugo to win, but overall, it's not a very intriguing Oscar year.

I hear ya. I too am surprised there hasn't been more talk about this, around here on anyplace else. TWO nominations?? I haven't seen every movie released in 2011, obviously, but I find it hard to believe there weren't more than two good songs out of the hundreds of movies from 2011.

And IIRC they aren't even performing the nominated ones on the Oscars show. It would have been cool to either see Walter the Muppet and Jason Segal sing their song, or see who the Academy would've gotten to cover it.

Yeah, I'm disappointed if there won't be a performance of "Man or Muppet"!

The Academy seems to be coming under fire for a lot of the ways they do things these days. For "Best Song," there is a committee that evaluates both the submitted songs and how the song integrates in the movie (keeping out songs that are only used in the closing credits, for example). There is a certain rating threshold that a song much reach to be nominated (8.25, I believe), and if five don't cut it, there aren't five nominees.

There was a big to-do about a month ago about the Oscars not having the Muppets perform. I don't remember exactly what the controversy was (whether they only weren't letting the Muppets perform, or not letting anyone perform), but there were petitions and stuff to get the Muppets and Jason Segal to do their song.

The Muppets might have gotten me to actually tune it. Instead I am going to ignore the Oscars like I did all the nominated films.

This is the first year in a long time that I don't give a s**t about any of the films nominated, so I won't bother to watch.

I am looking out the window at the incredible traffic jam and swarms of helicopters and the Goodyear blimp circling the Hollywood & Highland complex. I can't WAIT till this all moves to the Nokia in 2014. Enough is enough is enough!

  16. Wow, Ryan's face was priceless, he should have seen this one coming. :D
