The only song where all three have a lead.

The single that sunk its release.

Should have been the lead off single imo.

A political song for the day but well constructed.

In the notes to the Tales From The Brothers Gibb boxset, Maurice says that King and Country was to be included on the album although I've seen other sources that leave it off. It's too bad this album wasn't released and I still hope that one day it will. There are some beautiful songs here, but nothing that sounds like a hit single to my ears except Would I Be Someone and that, unfortunately, tanked.

I know many like Life In A Tin Can but to me these are far superior songs.

The songs are nice but there is no obvious single. The balled heavy direction that the Bee Gees had been pursuing since the 60s was becoming played out as well. I can see why the label rejected A Kick In The Head.

I read somewhere that 'A Kick' and 'Tin Can' were recorded at roughly the same time and were both ready to be released, seems to me they chose the wrong album to release, 'Kick' being much stronger IMO

This is a thread I thought I'd never see!

I like it better overall than its companion.

I get that it is a lot of hindsight with knowing now what was to come in a couple years but just love most of the songs.
They were finding their way and it makes (to me) Life In A Tin Can a strange offering given that all these songs were available apparently.

I think the Brothers or RSO could have taken the best tracks from Tin Can and A Kick In The Head and really created a solid album. Songs like South Dakota Morning, Jesus In Heaven and My Life Has Been A Song are classic early 70’s Bee Gees tracks. Harry’s Gate (the second, rocking part) would have made an excellent single (minus the heavy strings) to break the ballad mold, but their bread and butter was ballads and record companies seemed to play it safe with singles.

The singles selection process has long been a mystery to me.
They either picked the best track and a clear hit or they picked a head scratcher.

Head scratchers for me: “Throw A Penny”, “He’s A Liar”, “Paying The Price Of Love”.
