    Hi Folks,

I was listening to a Glen Campbell best-of and two songs stuck out for some reason - "Less of Me" and "Try a Little Kindness". It got me to thinking about other songs that mined a similar theme: Brotherhood, kindness, understanding, tolerance, humility. I'm going to compile a CD with this in mind. Off the top of my head, I could start off with:

He Ain't Heavy - The Hollies
Walk A Mile in My Shoes - Joe South
    Get Together - Youngbloods
    Love Train - O'Jays

What other recordings would you suggest? All music genres welcome.

Hmmm.... I would suggest "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" by Jackie DeShannon and "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love and Understanding" by Elvis Costello.

    Hi Peter,

Soundwise I prefer the other Glen Campbell best-of that I have, "20 Greatest Hits". The UK "Capitol Years" compilation seems a bit "flat" and lacking in dynamics to these ears. But, and this is a BIG but, the track selection on the UK set (particularly the 1st disc) is superb. Makes me want to get all of his early Capitol albums.

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

Can't think of any other track to end any such album. The sound of an old man grateful for everything he was given(and allowed to give back)--yet written by others. Perfect.

I heartily agree that Satchmo's "What a Wonderful World" is the perfect closer. I think "Love Train" would make a good opener!

(And a message to Elvis: take good care of Diana Krall - I don't know why she chose you over me - I guess you are an infinitely better songwriter than I am - Peace in our Time is one of your best - but I think she would be so much happier with me. )

Sorry, but I don't think this fits, especially when you consider the context it was meant to be in.

    Let's see...

1st verse - acknowledgement of pain in world and a wish for love
2nd verse - explicit condemnation of war, reiterate wish for love of 1st verse
3rd verse - description of labor issues, racial brutality, other unrest
4th verse - condemnation of misunderstanding between social classes
5th verse - repeat of third verse

Grant, how in the world does this not fit? It is one giant plea for peace in the face of the issues described in each verse. Not even to mention that any listener takes the role of the "brother", "mother", and "father" in Marvin's pleas, or that the whole thing rests on the most supportful (and peaceful) bass lines every put to wax.

Interpretations of art are always subjective, but the fact that Jimbo and I each listed it within a minute of each other has to mean there is some validity to its fit for this thread...
