But you do get his best period - from Unicorn up to Tanx.

Listen to Come on Up on your mono Collections. The stereo version has a "woo" and a "baby" in the fade out that isn't on the mono.

The fade here is very short, just two seconds. I can distiguish a very faint "wuh" and maybe the beginning of another word just before ending, but not sure. Does that mean it's a fold?

Curious as to how you know this. I have one and thought it was a fold but I haven't played it in ages.

I'm not sure, perhaps compare the outro to the stereo CD or to YouTube. It's the track that has the biggest difference as far as I can tell

I have one too, and Sisters of Mercy has the ragtime band mixed WAY louder than the stereo

If I can trust the facts to the Youtube video this has the exactly same ending as the 1966 single, so I'm almost convinced :)

Also important that the US mono number is on the UK label.

If it'd been a fold they would have used the stereo number (as with Bookends)

or no reference at all (as Cheap Thrills)

Maybe that can be one guideline if it's true or not.

That's enough evidence for me :) if it matches the single then it's true mono.

By the way, have you ever heard a UK mono copy of We're Only In It For The Money? I've noticed you have a few Zappa/ Mothers LPs on your blog.

    Yes this is it

On this I'm not 100% sure about relation to US or between stereo and mono and may need correction.

I have a US mono promo, and I've compared it to the original stereo mix.

On my US mono there is a saxophone solo under Zappa's monologue in the outro of Who Needs The Peace Corps. In the stereo it only comes in right at the end when he says "but I won't care". Also the mono Concentration Moon has only piano in the "all of my friends, still running free" part. The stereo has piano AND acoustic guitar.

The sax solo is there all the way, but not very loud, and the CM part has the piano only. So beyond all doubts this UK is from the US mono tapes. Happy times :)

Btw UK Absolutely Free mono sounds very unlike the US with lots more bass and differing balance. Before I thought it was altered to fit the UK market, but now I'm starting to suspect it's a fold. Any thoughts?

  13. The Canadian Absolutely free is a dedicated mix. In fact Canadian pressings get forgotten about in the US/UK mono debate where many of them are dedicated mixes.

Can anyone confirm that the UK Notorious Byrd Brothers is a dedicated mix?

Not sure, but the UK has the US mono number on label and that would mean US mono tapes were used. The UK sounds like a fold and as I've been told it's about the same outcome as the US mono, so maybe both are folds.

Oh they are not forgotten but fortunately they miss the criteria of what we are trying to list - they are real mono not the folds that the UK versions tend to be.

So Absolutely Free could qualify as a US true and UK fold.

  17. I see. So then I wonder if the Byrds LP is a fold or not?

As soon as we know it can go on the list if it is a fold.

Not absolutely sure it is a fold since the only big difference is it has a lot more bass. Have to check it further...

It sure sounds like a fold - unbalanced and partly muddy. No way a dedicated mix would be like that. Question is - is the US mono also a fold? As far as I've heard it sounds about the same so probably...

I own the UK mono and it's dedicated. Sounds better than the US stereo. ( which I have)

Notorious Byrd Brothers? Columbia label, 1968 -- NOT a fold. You can't even get through the first track and not hear significant differences. And no way Bob Irwin, an expert on these things, would allow a mono reissue from a stereo fold. Plus a tape box, if such a thing even existed, would probably have mastering notations for folding. This stuff is old hat.

    Thank You Paul!

Never had the opportunity to compare my UK mono with a US or UK 1st press stereo. Now I know :)

Btw don't You agree "It's Been Too Long" and "The Fool" on it smashes most other issues. I've heard a few and non of them even comes close. Cipollina's sharp 100% clear guitars to the dark background gives me goosebumps.

UK "Happy Trails" mono is a fold for sure, but sounds totally OK
