A/V techies: what input signal takes the lead when multiple are present?

Currently I have my DirectTV signal running from the DTV box to my VCR and then via Coax. to the TV. The DTV signal (audio and video) gets through whether the VCR is turned on or off. The VCR signal overrides the DTV signal if I play a tape.

Question: if I keep the above lines in place but also run an S-video and audio cables from the DTV box to the TV, will those signals take precedence over the signal from the coax. line?

I'd like to take advantage of the superior image quality given by the S-video input without sacrificing my ability to watch a video tape.

    TIA,
    Ere

If I understand the question correctly, your S-Video will work when you switch the TV mode to match that of the S-Video input. A "direct" connection for video, which is always better, IMO.

I suspect the answer depends on your particular hardware.
