I can't believe i never saw this before either! Wonder if it never made it on TV back in the day. Recorded, then shelved. It's so bad it's good!

This is all the proof you could need that the 1970s were the best period in American history.

I watched this on Friday. Hysterical! My favorite part was Rod Stewart shooting goals on ELO's Richard Tandy. But there are so many great parts. Hysterical to watch the very young Joan Jett and Sandy West killing the older ladies in just about every competition too.

I had to turn it off when Sandy West is being interviewed by Susan Anton and they bring in team captain Sandy Duncan before cutting to the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.

That is just too much 70s awesomeness to handle.

OMG-What's next?? Rock Stars on Gilligan's Island??? Rockin Love Boat?

    Sandy Duncan??? Holy 70s!!!!

But the thing that amazes me most was that this was basically an "A" list of rockers at the time!

Thank you for posting this. I'll be watching the entire thing for sure! I may have seen this when it was on but don't recall it at all. I used to love Battle Of The Network Stars so it stands to reason I would have tuned in to this too. I just watched the intro and my mind is officially blown!

Well... Gilligan's Island did have that rock band episode (featuring the Wellingtons and of course the Honeybees) and Love Boat did feature guests including Sonny Bono, Paul Williams, Marilyn McCoo, Toni Tennille, Billy Davis Jr., Telma Hopkins, The Hudson Brothers, David Cassidy, The Village People, Helen Reddy, Marie Osmond, Donny Osmond not to mention Charo and The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders :) .

Believe or not, I actually saw this when it first aired. About all I remember of it was that I enjoyed watching the events in which Lita Ford participated in (hey, I was a teenager at the time), along with the observation that musicians who do too many drugs don't exactly make for the best athletes.

I was referring more to all of those stupid 70s Gilligan Island movies, with the nadir being the Harlem Globtrotters on Gilligans Island. BAD 70s TV.

They edited out the sumo wrestling match featuring Meatloaf versus Leslie West.

Seriously, this video is like somewhere between reality and SCTV. Thanks for posting it.

The more I watched this yesterday, the more bizarre it all seemed.

I think @milankey hit the nail on the head with his description: somewhere between reality and SCTV :)

We need a Dr Who episode with Gary Numan.

WTF??? This is amazing, in a "you can't make this stuff up" way.

And...Helen Schneider????? No one in America (or even the rest of the world) would have had a clue who she was at the time this was aired...

    aroney Who really gives a...?

I remember seeing this when it first aired and thinking, "Who the heck are the Runaways?". Not a very well-known band, especially in upstate New York.

The girls kicked butt on the show though!

Plus random musical acts who aren't named up front just appear, like one of the Alesssi Brothers.
