However, there may be differences between even the redbook layer of the hybrid disc and the regular CD release, as there was with "Machine Gun". The Analogue Productions version was less compressed than the regular CD.

That is true...of course we don't even know if these are getting a standard CD release at this point. I believe the last time (prior to this) they did a digital mastering was in 2010. I guess they might be due??

I think the Sony is the same as the 1997 MCA, except for Axis Bold As Love, which was for some reason, different

WYWH SACD isn't anything special. The old Mastersound CD is much better IMO.

I haven’t heard the Mastersound, but I agree.......the SACD is nothing special

I found the AP Sacd definitive. I won’t be seeking out any other version.

The WYWH Mastersound CD doesn't have a 5.1 mix. So that alone makes the WYWH SACD something very special.

I have no doubt it’s the best version available, and I’m not saying it’s bad, but it disappointed me and I haven’t played it since.
Perhaps a case of unrealistic expectations?
Moving the stereo into a different room this weekend, will give it another chance, see if my opinion changes

Fair enough man - it’s possible that older masterings and pressings beat it; I wonder by how much. I’m not willing to spend anything to find out, as Shine On on the AP SACD sound absolutely stellar IMO.

Aren’t the Pink Floyd SACDs just reissues of the previous SACD masterings? Am I imagining or misremembering that?

I’d be surprised if they are new masterings. If they are going to be, wouldn’t it follow that this info would be included in the marketing info?

That's a good point. But, has APO ever used previous masterings and released them under their own banner?

Looking at Discogs it shows that James Guthrie and Joel Plante did the mastering on the WYWH AP SACD which was released in 2011. Not sure if Guthrie and Plante did previous masterings for WYWH. But I tend to think their mastering is specific to the AP SACD and also the CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs (in part/most recent) from the Immersion set also released in 2011.

Well, you would't necessarily have to buy anything.
You could beg, steal or borrow. :p

You need a universal blu-ray player that also plays SACD.
Two years ago when Billy Cobham's Spectrum came out on SACD, I bought a Sony blu-ray for less than $100 new.

Changed my life to hear Tommy Bolin & Jan Hammer duel across the back channels in surround.
WYWH, Birds of Fire, Supersession soon followed.
    On blu-ray: Yes, Chicago Quadio...
On DVD-A: King Crimson, Jethro Tull...

Since the DSD (to me it sounds like the redbook is mastered different) from the 2011 SACD of WYWH sounds so good already I personally would have liked to hear what a flat transfer sounded like (along with a flat transfer for DSOTM).

Same thing happened with the DSOTM SACD.

Wish You Were Here SACD was the same 2.0 & 5.1 as the Immersion Blu-Ray (and lacked the 4.0 mix). Except it was DSD converted from the original PCM.

My guess is the new one will simply be a reissue of the old one. If you have the old one - or the blu-ray (and I have both) - there’s probably nothing to see here.

I had the WYWH SACD (sold it) and I have the WYWH 2011 2CD and I don't think that's actually correct. I think the masterings are unique.

They may have been mastered by Guthrie and Plante but I don't think they are the same masterings. I started a thread in 2011 about this very topic:

Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here": 2011 Remaster vs. 2011 SACD Redbook

And I think it was discussed ad nauseam here as well:

"Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd on SACD

I could be totally wrong, but this is my memory of things.

If Janie & Co. can get their **** together, they should issue these new masterings as a special edition for chaque album, or even a box set: stereo + mono + outtakes etc.

Sorry I’m wasn’t talking about redbook. I couldn't care less about the redbook and forget that others do.

C'mon EH, we need a new remastering of both Electric Ladyland and Band Of Gypsys to complete the core catalogue. It's been 21 years since 1997!
