For the love of god, please. I don't care about multi-channel, just stereo would be fine.

    I never got the MFSL

I never saw it when it came out, and now it's expensive. 50 dollars ois too expensive for a used cd, IMO.

Keep looking. I doubt you'll see it on SACD anytime soon, but here's hoping.

If you look on half.com or ebay (whathaveyou) and find a copy that you can afford, I would strongly suggest you jump.

IMO the current remaster smokes the MFSL (one of their lesser efforts). I'm not holding my breath for a MC mix anyway, as some of the multi-tracks have gone missing.

Did you guys ever see the "Classic Albums" DVD of AJA? In it, Becker and Fagen are sitting at the mixing board, "bringing up" certain parts of the mix to highlight a sax or drum or guitar part. It's pretty cool, but it shows us that the multi-track masters must still be around. Since they are into MultiChannel (3 Quad LPs, 1 DTS Surround CD, 1 DVD-A) one would expect that we'll see a MC release, probably sooner than later.

Just where the heck did the DTS "Gaucho" come from????

The multis are missing for only a couple of the songs (I believe one is Home At Last). They used the ones that aren't missing in the documentary.

I'll (belatedly) second this--I got rid of my MFSL CD last year on half.com for $34.95. Good riddance--I thought it sounded like crap, being somewhat harsh and tiring to listen to. (Marginally better than the MFSL LP, which was also a disappointment compared to the other MFSLs I've owned.) Haven't bought any MFSLs since, either...the amount they charge is too much to gamble. I have no problems with the current CD, especially with the added liner notes and credits--it's the "keeper" in my collection. I destroyed my Citizen box set from carrying it around in the car with me for years. :) (Nice set of jewel boxes and booklet though--I may burn my own replacement CDs.)

The only CD I want to get now is the Gold (Expanded Edition), which includes some of those B-sides and miscellaneous tracks.

Dave, is it really worth it? How does it stack up against other versions?

The MFSL CD for "Aja" sounded like crap for a reason. It and "Gaucho" were mastered from EQ'ed copy tapes provided by MCA instead of the original two-track master mixes. And as of now unfortunately, those hoping to get a multichannel mix of "Aja" it's not in the offing right now. According to Becker and Fagen, the multitrack reels for the title track and "Black Cow" are missing. Last I heard they are still searching for them.:sigh:

Well Ron, I definitely don't agree with the others statements. I own both the MFSL UD1, maybe the UD2 is different;), and the original 1984 version, not Steve's though, and the MFSL is clearly the winner here. The 1984 isn't bad, no harshness, no spiked eq. settings, but it just doesn't deliver as well as the MFSL. The Decade Of album on MCA Gold sucks harshly from high-end pain and doesn't even come close to these 2. As for the new remaster....I have no idea.

I too sold my MFSL golds of both Aja and Gaucho on eBay after I heard the remastered CDs, which while not perfect by any means are preferable to my ears.

Aja is one of those albums I can't get enough copies of. I must have a half-dozen LP copies (Canadian red vinyl, MFSL, a few standard US ABCs) ... but I'd be most interested to pick up a SACD of it as well.

Steve mentioned in a thread awhile ago what had happened with the MoFi CDs.

The MoFi LP of AJA is overly bright, by the way. I still hang onto it for some odd reason. But I don't really enjoy playing it like I thought I would.

OTOH, I pulled out a used MoFi copy of George Benson's BREEZIN' last night and played it for the first time in a couple of years. VERY nice. Leaves the original dull 'n' hissy Warner CD in the dust.
