There are some album covers that I truly love and would like to have displayed as art. Aside from scanning images of album covers and enlarging them, I know of no way to get images of my fav. album covers, let alone get information about them (name of the artist and name of the picture.) Anyone know of any resources, or have any ideas?
In particular: Lots of titles from CTI records, especially Kenny Burrell Steely Dan--countdown to ecstacy Roxy Music-Avalon I'm really interested in the sources of these covers, too.
For jazz there are a few great books put out by the same publisher. They show the covers and only state who the musician and artist are. I'll bet there are some for Rock as well. I'll see if I can find the name of the publisher and get back to you. The Blue Note book is fantastic by the way.
I've seen lithographs of Yes album covers from Roger Dean from time to time that I'd love to have but they're too expensive for my blood so I bought a book of his artwork and it sits on my coffee table next to a book of artwork by H.R. Giger... Great conversation starter and it works for a cheapie like me.
If you're talking about older albums, look into used record shops. If you're lucky they'll have a good Lp cover suitable for hanging, and if it's a less-than-desirable copy (crappy, nth pressing; the record itself is damaged), you may be able to get it for real cheap. Otherwise, I'd look into shops that sell posters, 8"x10"'s, etc., which may sell cover reproductions. One of the most popular posters I've seen at all the colleges I've been to: the cover of "Blue Train."
These classic jazz lithos and photos are kinda pricey but I'll bet they are top notch! Mosaic Gallery
I don't recall who did the cover art of "Avalon", but almost all of the CTI covers were photographed by Pete Turner. The cover illustration on Steely Dan's "Countdown To Ecstacy" was done by Donald Fagen's then girlfriend Dorothy White. She also shot the cover photo for "Katy Lied".
One of my favorite sources: 1000 Record Covers by Michael Ochs Great photos and captions by era and genre / the author owns the collection - Taschen Press / Italy Great Book!
Tim, My wife has taken a lot of her favorite LP covers, removed the records, and framed the covers. She has them hanging in her office in our home. She purchased the frames, which are made exclusively to house LP covers, from Michael's, which is a local (Maryland) arts and crafts store. I would think that most arts and crafts stores would sell the same types of frames. Search used record stores, eBay, Salvation Army stores, etc., to find some of your favorite LP covers in decent shape, and have them framed. HeavyDistortion
