Dan Fogelberg Home Free (already mentioned) and Captured Angel. Imho, he was much better at making music.
Yes, photography IS an artform, but as you suspected, this is not what I had in mind for this thread. Cover photos by recording artists for their own albums could be an excellent idea for another thread.
I'm pretty sure Martin Mull did the artwork for this. He's an accomplished artist and this lines up with what I recall to be his style and technique at the time.
The original UK cover for The Move's Message From The Country was drawn by Roy Wood (based on a concept by Jeff Lynne), who also later drew the sleeve for his solo album, Boulders.
Someone mentioned Baroness / JDB .... He is an excellent artist in nouveau style. Some of his prints go for pretty good money.
