The recent post on The Beatles Revolver got me thinking about other album titles that are either a word play on the music format of a record/tape/CD or directly mention that it's a album/cassette or CD in the title. Here are some examples:

    Revolver -Beatles
In Square Circle - Stevie Wonder

We have a winner! And the cassette was called Cassette and the CD was called Compact Disc. The 7" single for "Rise" was titled "Single", the 12" was called "12" Single" and the music video was called "Video".

It in turn is often thought to have been influenced by Flipper's Album – Generic Flipper, who in turn released an album called Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985.

I'm slightly biased on this as the Super Deluxe Edition is scheduled to arrive at my doorstep today. :)

Did Stevie do that on purpose to make a pun on an album (circle) in a record sleeve (square)?

My examples may be stretching the original concept a bit...

Yes - 90125 and Dave Davies - AFL1-3603 are both named after their catalog numbers.

Then there's The Partridge Family Album - which was a bit of a pun as the artwork made it look like a picture album:

The Records released "Music on Both Sides".

ABBA had "The Album" and Wilco had "Wilco (The Album)".

To my knowledge, the first album simply called "Album" was by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1966. A couple of years later, they made one called Album 1700, after the catalog number.
