Schwartzwaldfahrt by Peter Brotzmann and Han Bennink: Recorded in Germany's Black Forest. A free jazz (literal) outing with Brotzmann playing various woodwinds and Bennink drumming on rocks, trees, a stream, etc.

Even though it was a studio, I'll nominate My Aim Is True. The studio was the size of a small kitchen and Elvis had to record vocals and guitar pinned in the corner behind his amp and the keyboard. Still one of the best albums in my opinion!

Some of the songs on Paul McCartney's London Town album were recorded on a yacht in the Virgin Islands.

How about all of Band on the Run, recorded at the EMI studio in Lagos, because McCartney thought it would be a cool place to visit.

Great Lake Swimmers' debut album, which was recorded over several months in an abandoned grain silo in Southern Ontario; crickets are included.

I guess Deep Purple's Machine Head. They had to relocate quickly due to a fire at the hotel they were at.

We ended up at the grand hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling Stones truck thing just outside
    Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
    I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

He says on the Impulse! book that he was recorded in the middle of traffic.

I think a good chunk of Pink Floyd Ltd. 1987's albums were recorded in a houseboat on the Thames. The guitar for SORROW was recorded in an arena (or possibly an airplane hangar) over a concert speaker system for that "big" sound.

Trent Reznor recorded The Downward Spiral and I believe some of Broken (recorded a vid for "Gave Up") at the Tate house. He was also living in there. The door to the state house is also now the front door to his studio.
I believe Marilyn Manson recorded some of Portrait of an American Family in there as well.

I think you meant The Basement Tapes, right? The Music From Big Pink album was a proper studio recording by The Band, without Dylan.

    Paul Horn.

Who else has recorded in a Great Pyramid, the Taj Mahal, a palace in Lhasa, and other spiritual settings?

Wasn't this one recorded in a NYC studio?

Their second album (the self-titled one) was recorded in the "pool house" on Sammy Davis Jr.'s Hollywood Hills estate, so I guess that would qualify as an "unusual location".

KISS' Rock and Roll Over recorded in an empty theater, the Star Theatre, with Peter Criss' drums recorded in the bathroom.

In the Pines by The Triffids was recorded cheaply in a remote woolshed in Western Australia. The loose atmosphere contributes to a great listen.

Trombonist Stuart Dempster. Organist E. Power Biggs. Although not in those exact locations. Pauline Oliveros seeks unusual sounding spaces in which to record, although not necessarily religious/spiritual. H.R. singer in Bad Brains, phoned in his performance for one of the songs on I Against I (I think it was Sacred Love) from jail where he was being held on a marijuana possession charge.
