my favorite favorite soundgarden stuff is 1992 and before...specifically anything around 1989 and before....man....Chris refined things on Badmotorfinger...but when he figured out what sort of vocal gift he was given...honestly I am getting goosebumps right now typing this.

he was unbelievable...possibly at that point the greatest hard rock vocalist in terms of his voice and what it could do ever...and I am well aware of Halford, Dio, and all the great singers...Chris had a real gift...they'd all acknowledge that as well./

AIC was heavily influenced by Soundgarden....although they didn't full copy them...they went from essentially a Bang Tango, Guns n Roses kind of band...to a full on dirge band....that was for sure based on the power of Cornell and company.

  4. For me, it's no contest. AIC.

They were without question the best band to come out of the 90's, let alone out of Seattle.

    For me.

Overall it's Alice in Chains but nothing beats Badmotorfinger

.... and to think he was originally going to be the drummer!

Back in the day I would have chosen Soundgarden but I now think that AIC's material is more varied and has survived the test of time much better and as a result I would choose them easily right now.

Alice in Chains' Unplugged is listenable the whole way through. I love Black Hole Sun but always thought much of Soundgarden's records came off as filler. So I voted for AIC, agree they are one of the best bands of their era.

I think musically I found Soundgarden to be more interesting, but I liked AIC for their distinct sound. I am talking about the years of both bands from their inception to 1996. To me Soundgarden experimented more.

I had to give it to Alice in Chains. Their lyrics are much more personal. Soundgarden was pretty awesome, but their songs weren't really about anything.

Huge fan of both, and my vote could go either way depending on the criteria--vocals, both are incredible but I favor Layne over Chris. Albums, I would take Superunknown, Badmotorfinger, and Down on The Upside over any AiC record. Songs, there are probably 5 or 6 AiC tracks that I would rank over my favorite Soundgarden song. Alice has a signature sound but I prefer the stylistic diversity of Soundgarden. Having seen both of them live, Alice definitely put on the better show for me.

I went with Alice overall, but it really is a close call.

aic has two great albums...facelift and dirt...dont care for jar of flies.

but soundgarden has a masterpiece with superunknown.

plus some old albums like louder than love are almost has good as those 2 aic albums.

    in short...soundgarden

Chris' vocal range in the early '90s was INSANE:

I don't listen to either any more, but I voted for Alice in Chains, on the basis that Dirt, Jar of Flies and SAP were on constant rotation (on cassette!!!) for me at the time of their release.

Definitely Alice, one of the best bands of that era. Hopefully they will release some vintage live tapes, because they were insane on stage at their peak. Their sole electric live album is a lacklustre compilation, badly produced and edited, and doesn't do them justice.

Tough call, but I'll have to give the edge to AIC.
