Here's what my Music Direct email said about this release:

'The very first all-DSD, multi-track, multichannel SACD recording ever....'

HUH? What about all of those Classical pure DSD, stereo/multichannel recordings from Telarc, BIS, Phillips, Channel Classics, Delos, Sony etc.? What about Blue Country Heart from Jorma Kaukonen or even New Favorite from AKUS? What exactly are they talking about?

I wondered the same thing. Maybe they mean it was the first "Live" DSD, multi-track, MCH SACD recording - since this was recording in front of a live audience.

Maybe at the time they were recording this concert they didn't know about the Jorma album (which was live in the studio, not live in concert) or the other pure DSD recordings.

At least, the marketing spin has worked. You read it, thought it didn't make sense, posted here about it, people will talk about it, and now people will be more informed about the live Alison Krauss album - and maybe more people will buy it. :D

Well, I can understand the 'live' angle, but even that wouldn't be true. The Michael Tilson Thomas and San Francisco Symphony recordings of Mahler's 6th and 1st symphonies were in front of live audiences, as was the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 with Lang Lang on Piano from Telarc. There are probably more, but I can't remember right now.

    The Alison Krauss SACDs:

    • 'Now That I've Found You' Rounder SACD 11661-0325-6
    • 'New Favorite' Rounder SACD 11661-0495-6

are just so damn good that any publicity they get is well deserved.

I rank the above among the absolutely best SACDs available so far.

Cash@Folsum: Stereo/MC Live SACD. I'm sure there are others.

Yes, but for obvious reasons - Cash @ Folsum not recorded direct to DSD. ;)

You're right. There have been several "live" DSD recordings and even a few Multitrack DSD recordings such as the upcoming Chick Corea Live 2 SACD Disc set on Stretch Records in April.

Even so, I say bring on more. We'll let the PR folks argue who was first or best! :)

Great album, but far too much digital reverb.

It may be a bit too much, but I think it works. Overall, I think it is an excellent sounding album.

The Alison Krauss SACDs are easily among the best-sounding in my collection. They are first-rate from beginning to end. The music is great too! :)

Maybe what they meant to say was:

'The very first all-DSD, multi-track, multichannel live SACD recording ever released by Rounder'

Anyway, whatever they meant to say it doesn't matter to me.

I already pre-ordered my copy about 2 weeks ago via the Rounder Records website for $17.99 for the 2 disc SACD set. That price seems cheaper than most other on-line retailers (who all seem to have it for $24.99).

Here is a link to the rounder web-site for the Alison Krauss live album:

Same here, and I pre-ordered the DVD as well. I believe, according to information Rounder sent me, that the release dates have been pushed back somewhat. The DVD is slated for a March 18 release, but similar to the Pink Floyd SACD, this SACD has been pushed back to an April 1 release. I believe it was supposed to come out in March, at or around the same time as the DVD.
