Musically speaking, the only song by an American Alternative band that I thought fit in with the Acid/Britpop scene was the Spin Doctors' "Two Princes" (even thought the vocals are a dead giveaway that they aren't British). A great song in its own right, it always reminded me of similar songs like Jesus Jones' "Right Here Right Now", EMF's "Unbelievable", Blur's "There's No Other Way", Inspiral Carpets' "Two Worlds Collide" or James' "Born Of Frustration" -- though not as layered or textured as, say, The Stone Roses' "I Want To Be Adored" or The Charlatans' "The Only One I Know". Oh, Hell... all the songs were layered and textured! lol That's what was so great about the music. Lots of great layered and textured songs from lots of great bands in that genre!

Here's my cd paying homage to the Britpop scene:

    Kingdom Of Rain (The The)
    Black Metallic (Catherine Wheel)
I Wanna Be Adored (Stone Roses)
    Two Worlds Collide (Inspiral Carpets)
    Born Of Frustration (James)
    There's No Other Way (Blur)
The Only One I Know (The Charlatans)
    Unbelievable (EMF)
Right Here, Right Now (Jesus Jones)
    Kinky Afro (Happy Mondays)
    I'm Free (Soup Dragons)
    Love Spreads (Stone Roses)
    Supersonic (Oasis)
    The Rolling People (The Verve)
    Leave Them All Behind (Ride)

And so many other bands not included. I may need to make a Britpop Vol. II cd for songs like this:

Not the band, just the song. It was part and parcel with all the other 3-minute, power-pop alternative songs I listed.

But I know it doesn't really belong in that genre, that's why it's not on my Acid/Britpop cd above.

The Ocean Blue had a pre-Britpop (Smiths/Housemartins) sound

"Dude, it's British and it's popular."

That's a listing of kick@$$ tunes, but it looks more like a mix of baggy, grebo, and Madchester IMO.

Indeed, more then one song from BRMC has a britpop vibe, actually. Like the Dandy Warhols which have been mentioned above, they're often included in the neo-psychedelic lot, but yet like the Dandy Warhols they don't share much with the jangly, post-punkish neo-psychedelia of the 80s. My feeling is that - relying on the misunderstanding that the term might simply refer to any form of contemporary psychedelic rock - "neo-psychedelia" is often used as a spare tag for these american bands which would perfectly fit the britpop category, were they not american.

I think The Strokes' first album were the closest to "American Brit Pop". I can't really speak of the rest of their catalog.
