I just picked up a quad of vintage Ampex 601 mic preamps. They are in pretty rough shape, but I was wondering if they would be worth restoring to use as preamps in my studio. The other thing is that they don't have power cords....just the plugs that connect to the transport. Does this mean that they don't have power supplies? I have no idea what I've got here so I'm hoping someone with some experience can give me some advice.

601's clip and I never liked the sound of them.

Try and find some 350 or 351's..

I agree with Steve, 350's and 351's are much better. The 601's are ok in the little suitcase Ampex recorder, which was not too bad of a recorder, but its weak point was the preamps.

Is this clipping a potentially pleasant thing? For example, I've heard plenty of vintage recordings where a little tube distortion makes for some nice drum or vocal sounds.
