Yes, this movie will be on Blu-ray and will be in the Original Aspect Ratio on October 2, the only way to watch the movie: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008JEJPSC/

You will soon no longer have to order the R2 DVD in print or look for an original R1 DVD issue of this movie to get the movie in widescreen.

Apparently, Sony took notice of this gripe I posted on the thread at http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=202539 and I will reprint it here: Here is a gripe of something I'm not happy about in regards to the 1982 movie remake of the Broadway musical "Annie." On the Region 1 DVD issued in 2000 with the yellow background and the picture of Annie and Sandy, it has the widescreen print on one side and pan and scan on the other. The Region 1 DVD of the Anniversary edition in print, it is pan and scan only while the Region 2 DVD of the Anniversary edition keeps it in widescreen. I may eventually go on the Internet and order the Region 2 DVD of this or get a used copy of the 2000 Region 1 DVD as I have long loved the movie growing up and is my sister's all time favorite movie and she still loves it to this day. If Sony sees this, although I don't have a widescreen TV, I would prefer Sony to issue the Anniversary edition widescreen DVD that is in print in Region 2, in Region 1. A lot of the musical performances in Annie are to be seen in widescreen.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of ANNIE's hit debut on Broadway, we present the classic movie version of the beloved musical, now digitally remastered and featuring the original theatrical trailer. ANNIE is the story of a plucky, red-haired girl who dreams of life outside her dreary orphanage. One day, Annie (Aileen Quinn) is chosen to stay for one week with the famous billionaire "Daddy" Warbucks (Albert Finney). One week turns into many and the only person standing in the way of Annie's fun is Miss Hannigan, the gin-soaked ruler of the orphanage (played to hilarious perfection by Carol Burnett). Will Miss Hannigan's zany attempts to kidnap the irrepressible Annie succeed? Enjoy all the unforgettable songs, including "It's A Hard Knock Life" and "Tomorrow."

Boy, I used to torture my parents with this movie watching it over and over as a kid. Been a long time since I've seen it. Might be a good opportunity to revisit it.

Either wait for the Blu-Ray or if you do not have a Blu-Ray player buy a R2 Anniversary Edition DVD if you have an all-region DVD player or look for an older DVD issue with the yellow cover.

    Desirable US DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Annie-Widescreen-Edition-Aileen-Quinn/dp/0767853636/
UK Anniversary Edition DVD using the widescreen print: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Annie-Special-Anniversary-Edition-DVD/dp/B0000WSTKQ/ (Amazon UK) or http://www.amazon.com/Annie-Special-Edition-Aileen-Quinn/dp/B0000WSTKQ/ (Amazon US listing, ships from UK sellers)

or search for a widescreen laserdisc such as this on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LASERDISC-A...092376922?pt=US_Laserdisc&hash=item337a21f15a or Half.com: http://product.half.ebay.com/Annie-Laserdisc/3053624&tg=info

Are any of you planning on getting the Blu-Ray of this movie being that the widescreen print had long been OOP and it deserved the deluxe treatment it has received?

I put in a request for a review copy. I don't care for the movie, but I reviewed it once and will do so again! :)

I can just see your review now- "The movie still sucks, but at least it looks better".

    Yeah, pretty much! :D

I usually don't change the movie discussion parts of my reviews - I leave those alone and just update the technical specs.

I usually try to say something like "fans should be happy with this release" if I think it's a quality disc. But I doubt that I'll change my mind about the movie itself...

That's a very diplomatic, polite way of saying "Nobody else but the fans will want to pony up the money to re-buy this piece of crapola". :)

You know, when I mastered this movie for Columbia -- twice -- in the 1980s and 1990s, I told them there was a 1-hour documentary on the making of the film with John Huston, and for whatever reason, they could never find a copy of it to use. I think it's up on YouTube, so somebody has it!

Update: found it, but it's in many parts...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2SmaBv8aL4

The negative was very soft and ugly as I recall, shot with a lot of heavy filtration to try to get a "1930s" nostalgic look. I don't doubt they could do a brilliant job with modern scanners and color-correction equipment.

I'm with Paul above -- this is a horrible, horrible, horrible movie. I'm sympathetic to people who saw it as children and liked it, but speaking as a former child, I would hate it if I was 6 and hate it if I was 56. It's a bad movie that deserved to be a failure. But it does have a few good songs in it, and I don't doubt the Broadway musical was deservedly a huge hit. Some plays and musicals do not translate well to film.

I've seen bits and pieces of it, and I was really unimpressed. I don't think I could sit through the whole thing.

It was torture for me to sit through it, and I was being paid at the time! Awful film. Carol Burnett in particular is horrible.

The "Making of" documentary is very interesting. They seemed absolutely convinced this was going to be one of the biggest hits in the history of movies, and their enthusiasm is very sad in context; the film lost a ton of money for the studio, and I think several top Columbia execs lost their jobs over it.

But I have great news: Will Smith is producing an all-black remake of Annie, starring his daughter, Willow. No... I am not kidding:

what makes it so horrible? like you said, stage productions/musicals dont always transfer well to film. but what makes this one so different?

Bad songs, horrible acting, and a general unwatchability.

I wouldn't judge it in advance. Honestly, the new version can't be worse than the 1982 film - it just can't...

You're welcome. At least the UK DVD is inexpensive and is worth having for those on a tight budget.
