Recently bought a Marshall Crenshaw collection, The Pretenders Pirate box set and a Rickie Lee Jones anthology. I previously bought a Chicago double disc set that I believe was Rhino. All Rhino stuff. I find the Crenshaw set to be bright and thin, especially the earlier cuts and The Pretenders set (so far) hurts my ears. I find it loud and sharp sounding. Chicago collection has well known issues. Hey, at least the overall tone of the Rickie Lee Jones 3-disc set is fine, not aggressive, and I can actually turn it up without ear-bleed. Sounds good so far. Baffles me why I find so many Rhino collections aggressive in the upper mids and treble. If they start compressing them (Pretenders???), even worse. I have to agree with some former posts; overall I find most Rhino mastering fatiguing. Too bad 'cause they make some nice complilations. I HATE hard, aggressive, bright music. Throw in a dash of sibilance and sizzly, hashy cymbals and you have a drink coaster. The Cars disc (Rhino) is on the way from My Music-is that going to be bright and loud too?? Oh well.
