    Friends,

I have found yet another dynamic radio station survey from a station I grew up listening to every day. Please note the tremendous variety on this chart, the 'B' side (#13), the album track (#20) and the great list of EXTRAS on the weekly playlist. KXOK would play regional hits and they had the courage to break records that were released by new or lessor known acts. When I examine this chart, I cannot say that I clearly recognize chart hits #'s: 22, 27 (this was a hit by Elvis?), 28, 33 and 35. Sadly, #7 has never been issued on CD to the best of my knowledge.

I had the good forture of taking a tour of this station in 1966. They were using all vintage tube based equipment in that era and as a result they had a big, fat, warm sound and they added 'plate reverb' to everything!

KXOK primarily employed DJ's with big, deep Radio voices and they had a lively news department as well. The were a juggernaunt in Mid-America in the 1960's...

    Bob

Think that that market didn't get enough Herman's Hermits? :)

They were 'hot' in that era. As one HH track was moving up the charts, another HH track was moving down the charts. What I find so notable on this playlist is the variety - The Rolling Stones and The Letterman on the same chart!

The summer before 10th grade for me. Funny, the songs you don't remember I don't remember either with the exception of #22. It must have been a hit in LA cause I remember it well.

There was a small FM radio station in a nearby shopping center that played the hits. A friend and I would ride our bikes over there almost every day and watch through the window.

    Bill,

I was 14 when this chart was popular and I was really just getting to be a music nut. The 'madness' has never left me since!

The charts were far from homogenuous in those days and I listened to as many stations as I could in order to hear new and different hits! I used to order 45's that I heard on stations from different markets on the AM band.

Do you still have the singles you purchased at a teen?

    Sckott,

Yes, packed away in a storage facility. I cannot say that I took great care of them then as I should have. I took them to friends and lent them to girls that I liked!:p

I am sure I was not too different than other Teens of that era...

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

    Good morning Bob, everyone!:)

Of the songs you listed as being unfamiliar, Bob, sure there isn't a typo there? The Seekers' song is pretty well known, a major international hit(though I wish the mono mix would find its way to CD...bongos mixed too loud in the stereo mix).....of the others, the ELVIS track first appeared on the 1962 Lp POT LUCK WITH ELVIS...by this time, RCA Victor must have known most of the soundtrack stuff was garbage, hence their reissuing on 45 of vintage Lp cuts that could easily have been hits years before, but this was when Elvis was still coming up with reasonably decent singles....the Fred Hughes R&B hit is a murky mother(he rerecorded it for Brunswick later on), but did well, but probably didn't get a lot of standard AM airplay. The Jack Jones 45 was a top ten easy listening side, the Lopez cut a minor Hot 100(#85)and EL(#25)track, but neither very memorable(at least Trini had style; Jones was a handsome presence but very musically bland and derivative).

I agree, it's a shame the Hodges 45 hasn't seen CD light of day, and it did okay on the Hot 100....the followup Aurora 45 was "Love Minus Zero," Eddie covering Dylan(!).

Sure wish Ace would start a 2nd GOLDEN AGE OF ROCK'N'ROLL covering oddball charters from 1964-72, something like that...still quite a few not on CD, more than many might realize....and what is out there by some of the more marginal acts aren't always in the best sound quality.

Great chart, Bob!:D From a great time....

    Hi Ed!

I thought this chart was one that you might enjoy because of the lesser known tracks. Thanks for your additional information on these more minor hits. The Seekers track just does not ring any bells as it should, obviously.

That Fred Hughes tracks sounds very interesting!

I wish I had an aircheck of this station during the period of this chart...by listening to this station, I was inspired to buy many 45's.

    That chart was great!!

I wish some of the Rock Journalists would go back to those kind of charts to see what was REALLY popular then, not what they SAY way popular then.

So many writers dismiss Hermans Hermits as a nothing act....well, that nothing act racked up 14 chart hits in a 2 year period. They wwere HUGE at that time, and I donbt appreciate the writers changing history.

Ditto for The Lettermen. Those guys had a whopping 32 charting Albums, yet today its like they never existed. They did every major TV show and were household names in the 60s. When you thought of harmony love ballads, you thought of The Lettermen. And they had their own sound.....they didnt do straight 3 part harmony like many of the other groups. They had their own sound with a high falsetto doubling the lead.

    Hi Bob,

Great radio chart from summer 1965. Of the 36 records, I count about 16 that still get regular airplay on "oldies" radio. That's a good indication of how well the music has held up.

    Hi Jim,

I just wish 'Oldies' Radio played more of these historic tracks. And yes, many of these tracks have held up quite well...

Great chart list, it's funny to see the Beatles charting an album track!

    We sure do, Bob.

I once was helping to compile a "Rarities" type oldies comp for a small reissue label, (since defunct) and wanted to use Patty Dukes "Say Something Funny", a chart hit from 1964. They wouldnt use it, as they said "Patty Duke isnt considered a Singer". It speaks voumes about the attiude of some labels.

    Nice chart, Bob!

Does the Patty Duke single "Don't Just Stand There" appear on any CDs other than an Eric Records compilation? Borders used to sell al lot of Eric product but I haven't seen any there for months now.

Bob, is that track on your 1965 volume? Hint! Hint!

Let's see now, I think I have it on an Ace comp as well. One of the volumes of 'Early Girls'? I'll have to check when I get home. I only have a Stereo mix though, I know that!

Yes, 'Don't Just Stand There' is on one of the Reel tape masters for 1965.

    I like the track...

I never heard the song. I did have a chance to get that Eric CD but then right when I decided to buy it I remembered that they are infamous for using life-sucking NR on everything.:realmad: Naturally, I decided to pass on it.

Ah yes, the Tom Daley approach. I just checked the Ace site - not on one of their comps but, I know that I have at least 2 different masterings of the Stereo mix...as I recall Tom was not too destructive on the track. It is actually a pretty good sounding recording.

Not on volumes 1 thru 3 of Ace "Early Girls" ... you may be thinking of this Hard to Find 45's CD ... also available on The Best of Patty Duke: Just Patty ... ironically, Herman's Hermits apparently also did a version ...

If you don't mind ... Bob ... I will post a corresponding KLIF survey later this afternoon ...

Yeah, I checked Ace's site as well....perhaps the only version I have is on the Eric records comp?

    Please Chip, post that chart!
