When I first heard that instrumental version of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" at the beginning of "The Beatles Story" I thought it was the George Martin orchestra. When I finally heard Martin's album, I was disappointed that it was not the same recording. Then a friend told me the "Beatles Story" version was by the Hollyridge Strings. Too bad not many of their albums seem to be available on CD. Where can this 3-CD set be obtained? It's not listed on Amazon.

I love me some Hollyridge Strings, especially their Christmas Favorites album. Talk about a perennial favorite in my house come December! Their Beach Boys and Nat "King" Cole song books are quite good, as is the Elvis LP/CD of theirs, but I can't say I reach for that one all too often.

I am thrilled, though, that CCM was able to liscence The Hollyridge Strings albums from Capitol that they did. It's superb 1960s easy listening, IMHO.

I do wish CCM would reissue the complete Hollyridge Strings Beatles song book albums on CD, but I'm not holding my breath. Maybe one day...

They are fun LPs but I would hardly consider them "the best instrumental interpreters of Beatles music". Their style defined the term "elevator music". From an instrumental/arrangement standpoint I much prefer the George Martin stuff.

I recently picked up a sealed copy of The Hollyridge Strings' "Beatles Song Book" album (the first of five volumes) and was so impressed with it I've decided to seek out the other volumes. I don't know whether I'm turning into my grandfather or if, after watching several season of "Mad Men," I just have a bizarre new appreciation for orchestral arrangements of rock classics, but whatever my problem is, I really like this first album. I've heard some tracks from the other volumes, and a few of those are particularly nice, including "Penny Lane" and "Here Comes The Sun."

I see that the CD versions mentioned above are demanding big prices ($70 to $100) on ebay and elsewhere -- and the albums aren't on iTunes. To me, a re-release should be a no-brainer for Capitol. I wonder why these albums aren't available on CD or for download?

To me, they're very evocative arrangements, epitomizing mid-60s, pseudo-hip bachelor pad music. Of course, that's only a good thing if you happen to like that kind of music. I have several volumes of Capitol's Ultra Lounge Series, and the Hollyridge Strings albums would fit nicely alongside those -- although the Ultra Lounge Series tended to favor the more extreme styles of music, while the Hollyridge Strings albums steer to the middle of the road.

This first album clocks in at just 26 minutes, but I guess that was comparable to some of The Beatles' actual albums on Capitol at that time...

Yes. Ever since I erroneously bought "The Beatles Songbook"* thinking it was by The Beatles. Still have it and still love it.

*Not the 1964 US release, but the Aussie budget compilation from 1983...

I love the Hollyridge Strings. A few years ago, Collector's Choice Music released a number of their albums on cd which are now sadly out of print. They can be found but they are getting more expensive. But the two Beach Boys and the Christmas albums are available on iTunes.

OBVIOUSLY a major Hollyridge fan! Excellent. I had the pleasure of meeting Stu Phillips a few times and he is a great guy. We talked Monkees and especially Hollyridge. Had him sign the Third album and the George, John... albums with his pictures on it.

    Very nice work boyjohn!!!

I never owned any of these way back when, but I remember them fondly because they were advertised along with the Beatles catalog on the backs of the early Capitol Beatles albums.

Listening to some Hollyridge Strings Beatles music as I eat dinner. Wonderful orchestra. Brings back the time and the memories as much as the Beatles recordings do!

Did the compilation I posted above ever get released in the US? I ask because the tapes used came from Capitol, and carry the matrix numbers ST 28083/4. The sleeve states "(P) Capitol".

I love the tracklisting, and my needledrop is still my goto copy for my Hollyridge Strings Beatles fix:

    01 - Hey Jude
    02 - Let It Be
    03 - Can't Buy Me Love
    04 - Something
    05 - And I Love Her
    06 - Strawberry Fields Forever
    07 - Eleanor Rigby
    08 - Penny Lane
    09 - Yesterday
    10 - Michelle
    11 - She Loves You
12 - The Long And Winding Road
    13 - All My Loving
    14 - Magical Mystery Tour
