Any other great Laurel & Hardy SILENT shorts beside "Big Business", "Bacon Grabber"...

    I really liked those two!

I also watched "The Music Box". It's great, and I adore their voices, but I thought there was too much over-the-top physical violence in it. Like I found the violent gestures between L & H to be sometimes gratuitous, unwarranted. I thought the acting and dynamics between the two in the silent ones I watched were more subtle, like they're friends in fact (and so won't poke each other in the eyes!)...

I would suggest "The Finishing Touch", probably my second favorite of the silents behind "Big Business". Ollie definitely takes a pounding, but I wouldn't call it violence (more like consequences of stupidity).

"Liberty", where they play prison escapees, is pretty great and sets the gold standard for pants-based humor. :)

Talking or Silent, the friendliness/friction was often a function of the plot. One of the silents ("The Battle of the Century") has Stan as a fighter and Ollie as his manager. Ollie takes an insurance policy out on Stan and then attempts to create a situation where he can collect on it.

To be fair, they were barely a year into their partnership and the personas that would become their trademark were still not really established at that point.

That was terrific! The pants business is hilarious and somewhat risqué! The skyscraper shooting is wonderful - I understand from a review at IMDb that there was a safety platform or something atop an existing house. You fear for the actors/characters because back in those days, that stuntless stuff just may have been likely!

Any silent L&H is worth viewing in my opinion - comedy gold. Hopefully these films will be fully restored to the extent possible and be released to DVD. I have the Image releases but that are a mixed bag with absurdly low bit rates.

Yes, I agree, "Liberty" was pretty incredible...its easy to see why the audiences of the 20s and 30s went wild for L&H.

As for the Safety aspect of that shoot, I'm sure they had a safety platform beneath them, but in some points of the film, it looks like they were beyond it. Hopefully it was just the angle of the camera.

I really liked the scene of the record store.....Wind up Record players!! The good old days.

Disqualified since they are talkies, but great nonetheless!

    Their Purple Moment.

Just yesterday I digitized my L&H laserdiscs and plan to watch them on DVD.

There is a silent version of the Laughing Gravy story but with a goat. Angora Love (1929)

Even the titles put a smile on my face. With Love and Hisses, Laughing Gravy, Double Whoopee, We Faw Down, etc. I've dropped "Double Whoopee" into a sentence a few times this week to the bemused puzzlement of coworkers.

That one is a talkie, too, but it is pretty cool seeing so many stars of the era in one two-reeler.

I just watched this one having the morning coffee. First time since childhood; it played often in one of those late PM tv shows for the kids back from school, and I loved it! Still do!

"Slipping Wives", though straying from the L&H-as-pals-on-the-road formula, ain't so bad. Watch Ollie giving Stan a bath... LOL!
