For me he remains one of the all time great Blues/Rock guitarists. In all honesty there wouldn't be many that I would put above him. I think Free are a fine band and very true to their Blues roots but Paul Kossoff makes it all a bit extra special.

    Any other fans out there??

Absolutely. FREE Live is my all-time favorite live album. He could express more in a few notes than any of the fast fingered shredders out there. I'm still in awe at how young he and the rest of the band were when they recorded those FREE albums. Just incredible. So much soul and maturity beyond their years.

Free are one of my favorites as well. Koss seemed to put a lot of emotion into his playing. That is how it comes across to me.

Any Lynyrd Skynyrd fan is also a Paul Kossoff fan by default - his guitar playing was a strong influence on both Allen Collins and Gary Rossington.

Ronnie Van Zant was a huge Free fan - each of the first 3 Skynyrd albums has one song that is a tribute to Free.

Kossoff learned at an early age that the notes that you don't play are just as important as how many notes that you play.

More years ago than I can recall I worked with Paul Kossoff's late father, David, on a UK tv programme about him. I THINK I remember it being interesting but don't have a copy or any idea if it's obtainable anywhere.

I worked closely with David on the post-production sound and despite a certain hagiographic excess the programme can certainly claim authenticity.

If I had to explain Blues-Rock to a novice I think I would just make them listen to "Free". I think that they defined the sound better that any other and rarely strayed.

His vibrato is on another level. Eric Clapton even asked Koss how he achieved that sound.

Didn't he trade Les Pauls with Eric Clapton at one point?

His Back Street Crawler album is essential, especially the Deluxe Edition.

I really like Free a lot (especially their self-titled album), and Paul Cossoff was a superb guitar player, no doubt about it.

"I Need You" on Second Helping, "On The Hunt" on Nuthin' Fancy, "Simple Man" on Prounounced. I can easily imagine Paul Rogers singing any of them.

I'm not familiar with Kossoff's work beyond Free that get played on classic rock radio. Can anyone point me to songs (preferably from his solo albums) that showcase his guitar playing?

I did not see this thread before I started the Free ABA thread. So, I guess you know my answer to your question. :D:D
