I made a compilation of some killer unreleased J Dilla beats from circulating demo tapes for a friend. It's not mixed, mastered or even themed but I did choose and order the tracklist carefully. I named it after the monolithic site Gobekli Tepe which dates back to around the 10th millennium BCE and was discovered in '96.. because finding amazing **** like this is like finding an old rare Dilla beat lol, also because I get to play on words.. Da Gobekli Tape I made the cover from an Alex Grey painting called Wonder On the left you'll see the samples he used

If Music Could Talk This was simply an attempt to create a double LP version of Sandinista that flows like London Calling, with a few other tracks strewn in. All killer, no filler. There is more or less a thematic link to each side, the first is the punk side, the second the dance side, the third the carnival side, and fourth the night side. 8, 10, 12 from Singles Box. 19 from Black Market Clash [I edited it to segue directly into the opening drums of If Music Could Talk, which were sampled from Bankrobber]
Just put together this R.E.M. comp that serves as a 1LP distillation of the daunting amount of 1988-1993 non-LP material. It was initially my idea to make a Dead Letter Office type comp, however, the group had gotten so prolific with b-sides, soundtrack contributions, fan club singles and guesting on others material during the early Warner period that it would require a multi-disc set. I therefore wanted to go with my faves from all those categories, and create an LP that sounded like an actual album. I feel it has a really good flow to it. I actually started this comp a few years ago, though it really didn't come together until the Automatic For The People Deluxe was released, which provided two tracks that helped balance out the LP. 1. Funtime 2. See No Evil 3. Alive And Living Now 4. Mike's Pop Song 5. Fretless 6. Title 7. Photograph 8. Night Swim 9. The Devil Rides Backwards 10. Here I Am Again 1. is an Iggy Pop cover and was the b-side to "Get Up" (1988) and also features on the Automatic Box. 2. is a Television cover and was featured on the first R.E.M. fan club single (1988), although they had performed it since 1985. 3. is the Golden Palominos featuring Michael Stipe from their album Drunk With Passion (1991). It is very "Out Of Time" sounding so fits well here. 4. and 9. are from the Automatic For The People Deluxe Edition. 5. Features Kate Pierson. Has appeared in various places though it was originally contributed to the Until The End Of The World soundtrack. 6. Is a live Green outtake with scratch vocals, whilst there is a studio demo it was only instrumental. 7. Features Natalie Merchant, who co-wrote it. Was initially left off Automatic For The People, though with Merchant's contribution became part of the charity compilation Born To Choose. 8. and 10. are leaked Out Of Time outtakes. 8. is not the same song as Nightswimming, though it is unknown what its' real title was, especially as the vocals are, like Title, Stipe mumbling trying to find a vocal melody. 10. is a vocal version of Organ Song with some lyrics that ended up in Fretless.

I made a modest Jorma / Tuna / JA comp for a guy who wasn't familiar with Hot Tuna. He was impressed with Burgers, but claimed JA was his sister's music and for whatever reason, he didn't want to revisit it. So I took my JA Loves You three disc set, took all the Jorma vocals, plus the songs where he was given songwriting credits, and some of the shredding numbers where if you give the guitar the same weight as the vocals, you realize that guitar is another BIG voice in that selection, (Hey Frederick being one good example). Filled it out with three songs from Pair A Dice Found (Tuna), and I was pretty pleased. One selection I was particularly proud of was the Signe Toly Anderson led Chauffeur Blues. I figured Jack and Jorma were the guys who were pushing Blues more than the other members, and insisted on having this on the Takes Off LP. And Signe does a nice, deep (what I call) contralto belting out the lyrics. Not your typical female vocal, deeper and louder than a lot of the popular female singers we are used to hearing.

It was recently discussed that Bob Marley's Legend leaves off a lot of great material though the sequels Rebel Music and Natural Mystic leave something to be desired. Part of the reason was a lack of focus on what singles Bob released internationally during his lifetime. I therefore wanted to create a compilation of 'not quite' deep cuts that were all a single somewhere, yet that flows well and keeps to the 14 track length. It complements "Legend" for anyone who wants to dip their toe in the water further. I've called it "Bob Around The World". 1. Concrete Jungle [The first single on Island, in the UK and also on Tuff Gong in Jamaica] 2. Slave Driver [B-side of Get Up Stand Up in most places, though substantially popular in Jamaica in its own right] 3. Burnin' And Lootin' [The lead single from Burnin' in Jamaica, under the name Curfew] 4. Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) [A single from Natty Dread, presented here in its Jamaican single version] 5. Rebel Music [3 O Clock Road Block] [A single from Natty Dread, presented here in its Jamaican single version] 6. So Jah Seh [The UK's equivalent single to the above, to my knowledge it has never been included on a compilation. Often forgotten in the wake of the substantially more successful live version of No Woman No Cry]. 7. Jah Live [A single recorded during the Rastaman Vibration sessions which received a UK and Jamaican release. though did not appear on the LP until the remaster. It was not released on any of the three Island compilations stated above, which is kind of shocking given how much it meant to Bob.] 8. Roots Rock Reggae [The first US single from Rastaman Vibration. Until after his death, this was reportedly his highest charting release there. The single mix includes the drum intro so I have included that here.] 9. Who The Cap Fit [The second US single from Rastaman Vibration. This single mix is an alternate take so I have included it here]. 10. Smile Jamaica [A single that is significant as it was nearly Bob's last. It was written to promote a tie-in concert of the same name, which was part organised by Jamaican prime minister Michael Manley, and his opponents tried to assassinate Bob and his associates (fortunately, they failed). There are a few versions of this track, this is the main single version as appears on Songs Of Freedom] 11. Survival [A single in the UK and Europe. I have often felt this song is as good as Exodus, yet it never received as much popularity.] 12. Work [A single only in France.] 13. Trenchtown [Single in Jamaica. Different mix to Confrontation] 14. I Know [Single in Jamaica. Different mix to Confrontation. The first single after Bob's death. This and the follow-up Trenchtown are often overlooked in relation to the worldwide popularity of the next single, Buffalo Soldier]

My daughter prefers rock to contemporary music, with her favorites being Buddy Holly, Guess Who, Queen and Bowie. I'm just doing a year by year for her from 1950-1999 with 50 songs a year, though I may do 60 from the 60's and 70 from the 70's. It's mostly hits or otherwise famous songs, by year of release, not chart peak. The 1960's were easy, due to the number of CDs I have. The 70's and 80's are much slower, due to around half the tracks having to be needle drops. For the early 50's I had to rely heavily on three or four boxed sets I have. Plus a buddy gave me a $50 Itunes gift card, which I've used up trying to dig up 50 tracks a year. I don't want to put the same artist over and over in any given year, even if they were busting out the hits. Going to have to stop at the end of the 20th century. I don't think I have 50 albums from any year post 2000.

If you had asked me in the 70's, when I made Rips of my LPs to cassette for my car, I would have said I was a genius. Not so much anymore.....

Leaked demo, 1992 16. Godzilla Soundtrack, 1998 This has been kicking around in some forms since I started it as a counterpoint to their covers comp, "Medium Rare", though came into its own with some stuff released later. It also stems from wanting to include "The One" on a release since Greatest Hits omitted it and it was one of the songs that got me into them. In addition, Dave Grohl said "A320" is his favorite FF song, so bookending the comp with those made sense. I've tried a lot of variations of his comp, though I wanted to have a set of songs where I like all of them and it flows, and followed my own 16 track, four to a side rule. It is quite a useful compilation as almost every song is from a different source, some of which are officially unreleased. Obviously, there are a fair few tracks I did not include, I omitted, for example, the majority of songs that appear on Special Editions of the albums, as well as anything I felt made the tempo drag or was too heavy to flow. The only cover I included was that of Ace Frehley's "Ozone", as it was omitted from Medium Rare and I particularly like it. I'm surprised they've never put anything like this out. The quality of the tracks here outshines much of their recent work, imo.
