I watched the excellent Blu-ray of COOL HAND LUKE, and among the prisoners with no lines was Dennis Hopper. My buddy thought it was similar-looking character actor of the time, but the credits confirmed the familiar, young-looking face was indeed Hopper.

Fast forward to last night and watching the credits roll at the conclusion of GANDHI, my friends and I were surprised to see Daniel Day Lewis and Colin Farrell listed. None of us recognized them during the film.

I remember watching PLATOON on video and recognizing Johnny Depp briefly during a crowd scene of soldiers. I don't know if he even had a screen credit.

Anyone else surprised at the appearance of a future name actor while viewing an older movie?

Nicholas Cage in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"", I don't think he has any lines. He may have in the TV edit.

    Cynthia Nixon in "Little Darlings".

    Gwyneth Paltrow in "Hook"

    Ed Harris in "Coma"

I was surprised to see Christopher Walken on Five-0 once. I remember being surprised by Robert Redford in an episode of Perry Mason.

He's given credit. More surprising (for people who already didn't know) was his small role in A Nightmare On Elm Street.

I remember Tom Cruise's early role in Taps before he was famous, but I had no idea about Tom Cruise being in Endless Love until years later. The same goes with Jami Gertz. Also, it didn't hit me that James Spader was in it either until years later after he had become famous in some of the Brat Pack movies.

Speaking of Brat Packers, the movie The Outsiders was full of them before many of them became famous. Matt Dillon and Leif Garrett were the only well-known people in the movie and C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Macchio were the main characters. But look at all the other actors that went on to bigger things. Some of them I never saw before until that movie:

    Rob Lowe
    Patrick Swayze
    Emilio Estevez
    Tom Cruise
    Diane Lane

Lawrence Fishburne was the Cowboy on Pee Wee's Playhouse...it doesn't get too much funnier or surprising than that.

Dennis Hopper had a part in the pilot episode of THE TIME TUNNEL as an opportunist character named "Bill Tabor". For reasons we can only guess today, his part was all but eliminated from the final aired film.

But his pre-introductory moment remains on film in the episode. Watch as James Darren's character walks toward Dennis Hopper after he first lands on the deck of the TITANIC. That's Dennis Hooper on the right side in the blue/grey suit and hat. But he received no credit for his role.
