Anyone else that rarely listens to Roxy Music's Avalon anymore?*

I find myself rarely wanting to listen to this album anymore. I have come to this based on-

Bryan Ferry's vocals sound kinda corny and lounge like compared to other RM albums.

Production too slick sounding. Over produced.

Not one song has any edge to it.

Tries to be too romantic sounding. Shmaltzy!

Am I alone in my views?

No, you're not alone. These are my feelings, too.

Avalon is one of those style over substance records that proliferated in that timeframe (the 1980s); but it's probably unfair to judge it musically, as I doubt if it was intended to be listened to carefully - it was more likely designed as a restaurant soundtrack.

Well, you have to kind of take it for what it is. It is a soft, loungy album. If that one does'nt work, you can always put on Viva! Roxy Music. Now, THAT'S more like it, right?

I like Avalon. It reads to me like an ALBUM - it has a sustained mood & feel. Of course, I have to be in the right mood for listening to it. But that can be said for any album that sustains a style & mood (Ramones debut, Elvis Costello's Get Happy, any Cocteau Twins disc, etc).

Al Jolson nails AVALON in his 1946 Decca recording. Don't much like his 1920 Columbia version though.

Actually, I think some of Roxy's other stuff sounds more dated now. Avalon is timeless and beautiful. But if you're not in the mood, I can understand why it would come across as a bit dull....

Agreed. I let it take me to a special place - and it works. My experience is that it's not "lounge music" - but a travel guide.

Good call, mate. It was the best album in the second half of Roxy's career. As hallowed as the early albums are I don't think much of that music has stood the test of time. A friend of mine actually refused to see them in NYC when they played here because they were playing too much of the older material! He missed a great show BUT he was spot on.:D

I really like Avalon (and I like Viva too). I may not play it every day but I wouldn't say I rarely listen to it anymore.

When I want to listen to Roxy Music (Ferry) I always reach for "Avalon" or "Boys & Girls".
The sound & production on these albums is like a junk for me. It captures me from start to finish. Although do like other albums, but I listen to them on iPod mostly.
