Anyone else think 'My Wife' is the best Who song ever?

It's the one I always look forward to when playing Who's Next. Love lots and lots of Who stuff, Quad, etc. But no song has held my interest for 3 plus decades as My Wife. It's fun to listen to Moon's playing, to the horns, or any other aspect. The thrill has never been gone. and it's not even a Townshend song!

Not looking to have anyone shout me down. Just my opinion...

p.s. I still don't know the lyrics and don't want to!

Yes it is a good song. Another example of John Entwistle's great humor.
But no there are many other Who songs I like better.

The lyrics are okaaaaay, but definitely the weak part of the song. Musically, you're right, absolutely holds up with their best. The horns at the end really are insane.

So, not my favorite, but I totally get it. For all that people say that Who's Next is a perfect album (AND IT IS), I don't hear a lot of love for this song. Looking forward to seeing other replies.

BTW, if you haven't listened to his 1971 solo album, "Smash Your Head Against The Wall," you really need to. He had a terrific year.

Have you ever listened to Entwistle's solo version- both studio and live...?

A very good song but far from The Who's best. I think probably Pinball Wizard is their best song because it has all the keys elements: great melody, alternating heavy and light passages, power chords, great bass and drums, interesting lyric, perfect vocal.

  11. Not their best,
But I like the song quite a lot.

This song has always been a favourite of mine.... partly because it's just a great song, but also because it's pretty much the only track from Who's Next that hasn't been ruined by endless repetition on classic rock radio.

Yup. It's not even the best song on "Who's Next" - IMO, it's one of the weaker songs on that album!

I don't know about radio, but I think that one's gotten a ton of exposure over the years - I'd argue only "WGFA", "BBE" and "Baba" have been more heard than "My Wife". It was on major compilations like "Kids Are Alright" and "Greatest Hits"...

I probably would have like it better if it was on the solo album rather than Who's Next. On what is probably the Who's greatest album, among 8 of Townshend's best compositions, "My Wife" is destined to be the 9th best song.

Yeah, I like that version too! Actually, the date is wrong the clip is from 1973 and its just a lip synch to the solo studio track. Entwistle put together another band called "The Ox" in '74-75 that he took out on the road. There's a live King Biscuit clip on youtube from the '75 tour.

One of my favorite songs on WHO'S NEXT. That slap echo gets me every time. I remember we had a cassette of the album and a little portable machine that we took camping with us in the Sierras. Hearing MY WIFE by the campfire at night, we had no idea who was singing but we knew it wasn't the main guy. I liked that fact. Every time I hear that song I remember the little tinny speaker with that special slap echo being enhanced echoing across the mountains. Since we were the only people there it didn't much matter. I hear WHO'S NEXT and I automatically smell pine needles, see melting snow and it's a great memory.

Later that year we all went to see the WHO at the Forum perform the album.

That just comes down to one's opinion. Personally, I'd much rather hear "My Wife" any day over the 5,000,000th repeat of "Behind Blue Eyes".....
