I just stopped watching after episode 4 because it far too violent for me. I think it's on the verge of 'sickening', which may be a strange thing for a SF action-comedy.
It's like George R. Martin's version of Douglas Adams's vision. A shame, really; I like most elements and the cast is fine. I stick with the old series, thank you.

If you like Stephen Mangan, check out his utterly bonkers and brilliant role in the hilarious series Green Wing.

Watched a couple episodes and sort of liked it. It just became too much work to follow, and as Yovra pointed out, it's just too graphic for what it is.

I'm enjoying this series. I doubt we will see a season two as the ratings don't seem all that great for it.

the Dirk Gently books are extended musings on the nature of existence. it sounds like this was entirely disregarded in translation to television.

It looks like it got picked up: ‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency’ Will Return to BBC America for Season Two | BBC America »

My wife and I finished it this week. My main issue is Dirk is too over-the-top and Elijah Wood's too bland. Liked the characters of Amanda and Bart and her partner, and The Rowdy 3 were inspired. A friend loves the books and says how funny they are, but I merely chuckled a couple of times an episode. They relied too much on Dirk's annoyances. And the villain reminded me of some other film - maybe John Lithgow in Buckaroo Bonzai, or an alien from Bad Taste? I don't know if we'll follow it.

Really enjoyed this series. Glad it will be back for season 2. A straight adaptation would not have worked, so I am glad that they took the approach they did.

Ahhh I thought it was a Netflix show...I said as I was watching it to my Gf that "this looks just like how a BBC show would be shot...Not Netflix!"

Easy to confuse as we seem to be getting 4 new Netflix shows a week!!!

As soon as I saw Max Landis's name appear, I knew it would be a little over the top. Watched the first episode last night. Not bad.

I also agree that I cannot for the life of me, understand the appeal of Elijah Wood. A face you could slap...continuously.

I absolutely loved the original UK miniseries, which captured the quirky tone and humor of Adams. The trailer for this new series really put me off because it looks so Hollywood with relentless references to violence. I counted thirteen violent edits in the trailer. Maybe it's fun (or less intense) in context, but the trailer makes it look like yet another show pandering to spectacle instead of the sublime and silly subtlety of Douglas Adams. I'm disappointed to see British shows moving more toward an American sensibility of quick edits and violence. To me, they become homogenous and lack personality.

I enjoyed the book Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and am about to start Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul. I knew going in that the story line of the show differed quite a bit from the books. I figured I'd be able to enjoy the show as something inspired by the source material. Unfortunately, it managed to completely turn me off almost immediately. Instead of wittiness and interesting characters, I found a big, loud, violent, overstuffed mess of a show. I especially didn't care for the show's obnoxious manic pixie version of Dirk Gently. YMMV of course.

I watched about 3 episodes, it was very hard viewing, truly awful. I thought the anglo actor would have rescued something so I gave it a chance.
Read the book, listen to the audio book, listen to the BBC radio dramatisation or watch the BBC tv mini series, anything else but this travesty.

I was trying to find something new to watch on Netflix & gave this one a try. I lasted two episodes but it just didn't connect with me. Too...zany? Sense8 on the other hand, is connecting.

    Yes, yes, yes!

    Loved season one!

    Loooooove season two!!

So many of the above posts just seem so off-base! Yes, the original books are existentialist - what do you think “It’s all connected” means!!!?

And Elijah Wood is fantastic, and not-at-all slappable!

We just started watching this. It's weird, wacked out, disjointed, and makes no sense ...... but we can't stop watching LOL. Not sure why but we're totally hooked on it. Part way through S1 now :). Samuel Barnett reminds me of a young Jim Carrey big time lol.

The thing you will come to appreciate is that once it establishes its internal logic, it does a pretty good job of not violating it. By the end of each series, your impression will move from "disjointed and makes no sense" to "disorienting but makes some kind of sense". Wacked out remains a constant, though.
