Stumbled on this show on Amazon Instant. I always worry about starting a new show... it's such a huge time commitment. I haven't heard anyone recommend this show, so my expectations were low.

I must say after watching most of season 1... this show is FANTASTIC. I have no idea why this isn't on anyone's radar yet. It's like a mashup of "True Detective" and "House of Cards". The quality is on par with both of those shows as well. The best part... the pilot is really good, so you'll know if it's your cup of tea pretty quickly.

    Anyone else watching this show?

Is it really twin peaks 2.0 as most say?

I don't think it approaches that level of weirdness, at least not 7 episodes in. But it's very good so far. It did make a pretty dramatic and unexpected veer in the last few directions though, so who knows.

Nic Pizzolatto, the fellow who wrote True Detective, was a writer on The Killing season 1...

Oh, really?!? That makes A LOT of sense. I can feel a similarity to the cadence of the dialogue.

Nic Pizzolatto only had a hand in writing two episodes (he says he only did two weeks in the writers room for The Killing), and he left the show because he didn't think he did well serving someone else's vision.

I'm surprised you hadn't heard anything about the show until now. It got a lot of buzz its first season. It got canceled after the second season, brought back for a third season, then canceled again... only to have a fourth and final season ordered by Netflix, to be released in August.

The Killing has its ups and downs, but the two things I've always loved about it: the rain-soaked, foreboding atmosphere and the chemistry between Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman. That's what makes the show for me, even when the writing isn't at its best.

Having never watched Twin Peaks but been around a lot of discussions I would say no. The Killing is not odd like I have heard about Twin Peaks. However, The Killing is much more gritty the normal TV fare. Just be prepared for the killing not to be resolved until season two. Not much of a spoiler but I at one time or another figured just about every cast member was the guilty party at some point. Season three is a different murder.

You may also want to check out Top Of The Lake. Not as good but a similar feel.

I was never sure whether The Killing's similarities to Twin Peaks were ripoff, homage, or unconscious borrowing... I can't remember them all now but certainly the first episode felt something like Twin Peaks' pilot, with the suggestions that the daughter had a secret life the parents didn't know about, and characters who resembled Peaks' Donna Hayward and Bobby Briggs (though these characters didn't end up being very important). And later on it is revealed that Rosie was secretly working at a casino "across the water," like Laura Palmer (though not doing the same thing!)

I'd skip seasons 1 and 2 and go directly for season 3. The formula of most of the episodes of the first two seasons became annoying and then almost unintentionally funny to me. The third season shows just how good the elements at hand can be when they all work together.

I actually didn't care for the storyline in the third season and only watched for Enos and Kinneman.

Yawn. One of the few shows on AMC that I gave up on. Red herring after red herring and a plot that went nowhere.

We liked it as well, but wasn't it cancelled?

It was cancelled by AMC...but they changed their mind and brought it back for season 3. Then they cancelled it again, and now Netflix took it and renewed it for a 6 episode season to finish off the series.

I think you're right. I love that it keeps coming back from the dead . What's even more odd is that the show is not really greatly loved and yet they keep resuscitating it.
