IMO the Redux version is even better...the added scenes give a bit of depth and humanity to Willard's character he otherwise lacked in the original version.

While I like the movie, Im not certain that its exactly a true depiction of what the war was about. Maybe its not suppose to be.

I much prefer the original version. The Redux version is bloated with needless plot lines to the story and takes you completely out of the journey.

You are correct, it is not a documentary. Are you aware of the source material and what the point of the film is?

It has aged unbelievably well, thanks in part to Vittorio Storaro's vivid camerawork and the ahead-of-its-time sound design.

Probably one of my favorite movies. Not just a ‘war film’ but flat out favorite movies. Coppola went through hell to get it made (watch the documentary “Heart of Darkness” if you haven’t).

Biggest problem was Brando is supposed to be this bad ass, special forces officer gone rouge in the jungles of Cambodia (or wherever) and he looks like a bloated toad. Otherwise, almost a perfect movie.

I couldn't even speak after seeing it. Just went to my room alone for hours.
I ad to have redux to see what happens to other characters and for the great Time magazine scene.
But I get it when people don't like it.

It's very possible it is also my favorite film. I had just finished the book a day or two before I saw it, so I was in a perfect state of mind.

If I remember Zevon's 'review' accurately, it was something like :'It's two hours of very cool visual effects and imagery, and then a sequence with Don Rickles at the end.'

Seen it many times including once in a 70mm print that I was told was Coppola's personal copy...though I have nothing to back that up. It was shown without credits at the beginning, they came on a sheet of paper. They showed it on campus where admission was normally free, but this was like $4...I saw it twice. The first was just after the Dolby people had come to tweak the sound system. We asked the techs exactly where to sit for maximum enjoyment. It was incredibly loud the first night. The second night we took a few of our female friends who were all very high. When the tiger jumped out of the jungle at least two of them hit the floor screaming. Hell, it scared me and I knew it was coming.

I agree that the longer version adds things, but I prefer the original.

If you haven't, you should read Heart of Darkness. You might also want to watch Anthony Bourdain's show when he travels the Congo.

I love Apocalypse Now and would rank it among my top ten favorite movies. I actually didn’t like it the first time I saw it, because I expected a straightforward war film like Platoon, and when I actually saw it I interpreted it as a Temple of Doom style adventure film. It wasn’t until I saw Redux that I actually “got” it. I prefer the theatrical cut, but I like both.

I think I would ixnay Bourdain's show and swap that for the Hearts Of Darkness documentary!
