I'm noticing Apple Lossless files are skipping whenever I try to use another player in conjunction with iTunes. It happens with both BitPerfect and Amarra, but if I open Audio Midi setup and manually choose the correct sample rate and bit depth, it plays fine in iTunes.

However, my understanding is (in addition improved audio), automatically switching sample rate/bit-depth is what these programs are supposed to handle very well. Does ALAC simply not play nice outside of iTunes? I sure hope the only answer is converting any ALAC to FLAC before listening.

Mac Mini 2.26 Intel Core Duo with 8GB RAM.

I use ALAC up to 24/192 on Pure Music/Mac Mini/Grace m903 - no issues in switching different file sample rates or bit depth. HTH...

I've used Audivrana and Pure Music without issue when sample rate switching. Just a guess but you might want to look at the memory buffer in the preferences of the softwares you are using and increase the amount.
