Reports in the UK suggest this album has sold more copies than the entire Top 20 COMBINED! That's a big fanbase. Not that sales are everything, but I would predict a bit drop on week 2.

But then in Britain they buy any old crap.

That is for the download/CD versions, not the vinyl. The vinyl sounds great, as a lot of us already know!

So ? There's ambient music out there that by essence has low dynamic range.

Bought the CD at Target. Has a lyric booklet as a bonus. It's about the size of the outer sleeve so you can't really do anything with it but stick it between the gatefold or just place it next to the package.

Also, the inner sleeve housing the CD is small and the CD packs in tight. Wasn't like that with the previous Arctic Monkey gatefold CD editions I have.

Hitting number one doesn't mean what it used to. But after five straight chart-toppers (and two more from LSP), anything less than number one would have a disappointment. Question now is: where will it peak in the US, Canada, etc.?

Here's a bit more detail from Music Week (the UK's industry publication for those who don't know) and for any sales geeks out there and which also confirms that it's outsold the rest of the Top 20 combined:
Monkeys magic: How Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino's opening sales compare to previous albums
It's also had so much mainstream press here that I can't see it dropping out of the Top 10 next week

I just checked the Australian charts and saw that it's number one there too.

Billboard had a big splashy headline about their new album hitting the top over there and how it was their sixth in a row. So it seems the industry has high hopes for it here too. AM made the top ten. I'd love to see Tranquility pull the four-bagger and reign across-the-board.

It's hit #1 in France but missed out in Germany (#4) -- so along with the UK, it's got two out of the top three major European sales markets (and the three the record labels really monitor in this region)

I’ve listened more now and my feeling is that it’s just not a great album. Some decent ideas and interesting lyrics delivered well, but nothing musically has the payoff of a lot of their other albums, even after repeated listening.

I really want to like this, but I’ve given it a lot of playing time and it just doesn’t do much for me. I don’t hate it, but there are several recent new releases by other bands that are giving me much more of the kind of listening satisfaction I’ve enjoyed from previous Arctic Monkeys albums. The top ones for me right now are the 2018 albums from Shame and Parquet Courts, both of which I am really loving a lot.

I finally found the time to sit down and really listen to it today. I didn't know that bands still did these kind of glam rock concept albums any more.

Arctic Monkeys sell more than average though, they're always breaking records, this time the fastest selling vinyl record in 25 years in the UK. It's far from their biggest opening week (debut did 363,735 copies in the first week, another record) but still the fastest selling album of the year so far.

Post Malone's 'Beerbongs & Bentleys' Nets Third Straight Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200

"Arctic Monkeys arrive with their third top 10 album, as Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino debuts at No. 8 with 47,000 units (37,000 in traditional album sales). It’s the alt-rock group’s first album since 2013’s AM, which reached No. 6. The act also collected a top 10 with 2007’s Favourite Worst Nightmare, which peaked at No. 7. In total, Tranquility lands Arctic Monkeys their sixth consecutive top 40 effort (their entirety of charting titles) since the band arrived on list in 2006 with the No. 24-peaking Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not."

Man! I think this is a fantastic record. I hadn't really checked A.M. out previously, and really just kind of randomly gave this one a listen on Spotify last week. It is very much up my alley.

My take on the concept (and I'm a sucker for a good concept album): It feels to me, at least in part, like an attempt to imagine what a record inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, and set in the time period of the film (i.e., 2001 or thereabouts), but created around the time of the film's release (i.e., late '60s, early '70s) might sound like. Hence, the Bowie-isms, references to "getting wild in the '70s", etc. All, of course, in service to a metaphor for modern life (social media, celebrity culture, etc.).

I need to go back and check out their earlier records--knowing that they don't apparently sound much like this one. But not until I've listened to this one a few more times.

The quick route is to start with their hit singles. That'll give you a basic overview.

Don't do it! Album/catalogue band, start from the beginning. Starting point, realise what a phenomenon this was in Europe from the beginning:

With only a few demos out, no album or single yet.

    And my own video/edit:
