It has been suggested that Crosby & Nash are "light pop" or a "barbershop duet". Would you say that's true? I would say absolutely not. Especially since this has been said to minimize their musical worth. How do you feel about it?

    No, not light pop

and if that were the case, is that important?
If the music is great for you, it doesn't matter if its light pop or not

What else would you call them? Bubblegum? No, Crosby perhaps but not Nash.
Elevator? No. Easy Listening... perhaps. Light pop describes them perfectly.
And, I said it, not to minimize anything about them. I am a fan of their early stuff.
The only reason the first CSN album had a rock edge to it was Stills playing most of the instruments.
Just calling it like it is.

It's well crafted music, to my ears. Not sure how to classify Crosby & Nash. No big deal to me. I like 'em.

Now they're bubblegum? You're not really saying it like it is. You're saying it like you want it to be.

Barbershop? Crosby hasn't been inside one for years.

    It sure ain't heavy metal.

And maybe he should reconsider that whole "Almost cut my hair" thing 'cause frankly, with that 'do, he's a mess.

Not a trace of either on this excellent live disc from 1977:

Crosby? Bubblelegum? Listen closely to "Guinnevere", "Long Time Coming", "The Lee Shore", the whole If Only I Could Remember My Name album, and the songs he wrote for the Byrds. A pretty far cry from "Yummy Yummy Yummy."

I'd say that some of Nash's songs like "Our House" or "Marrakesh Express" might be described as light pop, not that there's anything wrong with that. Crosby's stuff was generally a little too unusual, moody and harmonically complex to fit that tag, IMO. Don't get too worked up over it, it's just someone's condescending way of dissing the Croz and his fans (a.k.a. trolling).

Nothing wrong with light pop if it's good light pop. Their music has elements of that, but I can also hear folk roots and a rock edge.

I suspect that "The Paranoids" [from Thomas Pynchon's 'The Crying of Lot 49'] are the Byrds, circa 1964, before their big break. Plenty of paranoids in that group. I'm a fan of the Byrds and Crosby's music. But the dude was wayyyyyyyyyy off the rails for a while and it looks like Neil Young doesn't want to deal with him any more.

No question about that and I don't blame NY for being unhappy with him. Still, whatever Crosby's personal foibles may be, he made some great music in his day and I don't think it's accurate to contemptuously dismiss it as "bubblegum".

The first album (1972) I'd regard as light in quite a few spots. But, it's damn good light.

When I think of "light pop" I'm thinking Debby Boone and "You Light Up My Life", etc....not David Crosby or Graham Nash.

Turns out that David Crosby is a major league fan of Bulgarian Choral music. This usually consists of folk songs, arranged by Classically trained composers but sung by women who lived in the mountainous area of Bulgaria who have developed unusually big, loud voices. The choral arrangements use a lot of strange intervals, like Bartok's. I can hear those elements in Crosby's music. Interesting to note that Crosby cites the Philip Koutev ensemble in a mid-sixties interview regarding LSD. Crosby is very fond of a CD of that sort of music I recorded and edited—"Simply amazing harmonies…truly this is the most wonderful singing I have ever heard.”

I'd say that sort of musical interest/knowledge is far from 'bubblegum."

Also note the 'Sketches of Spain" chords in "Guinnevere."
