Are there any "Australianisms" in lyrics that we can explain to you non-Australians?

chook has multiple meanings ... chicken and an old duck .... feeding the chooks is not something we should be discussing on the forum ... i think it contravenes the rules ...

there will likely be a fair bit of crossover between a lot of the English and Australian slang

And of course the term of endearment and old computer game "Chuckie Egg".

I think some of these older Australianisms persist longer in small towns and in the outback. I never hear the word "cobber" used in everyday speech in Perth, but when I briefly worked in some small towns out in the wheat belt I did hear it used once or twice.

So much time lost, by so many playing Chuckie Egg!

Did the BBC Micro ever appear in Oz?

'political correctness' has and is destroying a lot of our 'lingo' as well, it's a shame, considering our country
is only 200 something years old y'know?
Lingo = 'our way of talking'

In a hundred years or so, nobody will understand the bush poetry of Henry Lawson or
Banjo Paterson. They're works in the future will be like a bible, people trying to work out
what they think they were talking about.
Even I read there stuff, I don't understand a lot of it, and I'm a country boy.

I used to watch Aussie football. I didn't understand the rules any better than I understand rugby rules.
(I would have included cricket but am pretty sure cricket does not have any rules.)

Aussie Rules is a different game than it used to be. 'Americanised' is a term used and usually not for the better
in terms of our Australian heritage, in other words, 'has become mainly about money, sponsorship, profile and drugs....'.

I was born in the 60s and political correctness in the UK in the 70s, had nowhere near surfaced.

OK some things were plain offensive and some from another time, but so much our language and culture is being changed almost daily, Chairman now Chair! I know no women offended by being called a Chairman. Not being given the chance of becoming a Chairman simply for being a woman is a totally different issue.

I saw that someone has posted and then deleted the Monty Python Bruces sketch, but being a pommie bastard, I posted it, as was said, it is funny - and ridiculous and not meant to be taken seriously.

Then I also deleted it!! If you guys think it can be taken as offensive, and of course I understand why, then I certainly don't want to derail a great thread.

I'm off to listen to the great Tom Lehrer, who is totally non-PC without being rude.

The Bruces' song which follows the Wattle quote without the offensive Bruces sketch.

For anyone who is interested, here is a link to a rendition of the Bruce's sketch so people can decide for themself - free speech!

    Monty Python Bruce

I actually really appreciate that this is a family friendly site.
